        I have 740 songs.
I clear out ones I no longer listen to every so often, haven't updated it for a while.
Calum does it the right way. I just put all cds on hard drive. I am beginning to cull down to sane number and ones I actually want to listen to. They wouldn't require an additional external hard drive.

            file size and bitrate.

24-bit sampling at 44100 Khz would be around 100MB per song- it's around 70 for 16-bit at 44100Khz.

it depends on the source. If the source is a CD, then it's kind of a waste: a CD is 16-bit stereo at 44.1Khz (not my mistaken 44,100Khz I said before ::)) if devcomp ripped a CD to 24 bit, an entire byte is wasted for each sample, and samples are taken 44100 times a second, so almost 44KB is wasted for each second of music..., if my calculations are not in error, of course.

If I want really good quality I just play it directly from the CDs- if I have it on CD. otherwise I likely purposely got a high-bitrate one (320kbps for my entire queen discography)

even with a 320kbps bitrate, I can still hear the difference (although slight) between them and playing from the CD.

On the other hand, I have a high-end Sound card :P

              Like BC_Programmer said,
The CD quality usually isnt high enough to rip that high. Your a bit obsessive if you do that...
Most people dont have the sound card to play and hear the difference, and if they do have a sound card that can, they often dont have the speakers. ("High Definition Sound Card" doesnt always cut it, since, the company doesnt define "high definition", and by speakers, I dont just mean loud, I mean well built).

Not to mention, the human ear cant tell the difference.

I prefer to keep my music at around 320KBPS, there was a time when I had VBR at that rate, I think.
Due to 40GB of music taking up my computer, on a 120GB hard drive when I have quite a few programs, I had to reduce everything to around 256KBPS, which is still a high quality.
