Unidentified sound

Hello,
I have new sound coming from my computer a few times a day but I can't figure out what program is causing it and what it means. It is definitely a program, not hardware noises. Just before it happens, whatever I'm working on gets hung up for just a moment. Since I can not associate it with any of the open programs, I am concerned it is some kind of spyware running in the background. I looked at the list of running processes and nothing stands out to me as suspicious. I would appreciate any ideas on how I can track down the source.

I see couple of possibilities, but please, describe the sound, first.

No reason to cause panic, unless you're sure about what you're saying.
