Deleted Sound Driver (Realtek High Def Audio Device)
    « on: December 09, 2008, 12:02:58 PM »
I kept getting an error message on my sound device...ran a scan and found a virus...thought I deleted it...BUT found out I deleted my entire sound device!!!!

I tried to do a recovery from the point before I had deleted the device...but the recovery would not complete....so still no sound and no sound device on my computer.

Have Windows XP Home Edition 2002 (service pack 2)
    Sony Vaio  model: VGN-FS742

I went to the Sony site for support, but must have overlooked a place where I could reinstall the device.

The sound device installed ws Realtek High Definition Audio Device.

    THANKS in advance!

After going through to "add/remove" programs....I found that it was still listed:

High Definition Audio Driver Package: KB835221
      version 20040219.000000

It gives a support link, but when I click on it, it says page is unavailable (it is on the Sony site).

When I click on my sound/audio devices in Control Panel...it shows "No Device Installed".

I also have Roxio Digital Media Audio, Roxio Digital Media Copy and Sonic Stage 3.2, Sonic Stage Mastering Studio Audio Filter Custom Preset in my "add/remove" programs - that I have NO clue what they are and it shows that they are "rarely" used (last date 2007).

Course, there is NO sound anywhere on my computer since there is no audio device installed.

Thanks....just wanted to post this new information that I found!

      Download, and install Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
Open it, click Computer, then Summary.
In upper menu, go Report>Quick Report-Summary
Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.
Don't include anything under line Debug - PCI

          THANK YOU KINDLY!!
It is back up and running....whoohoo!!!   ;D

Now...do I need to keep all of the following (add/remove)?

Windows Media Formatt II and Windows Media Player II
Roxio Digital Media Audio, Roxio Digital Media Copy
Sonic Stage 3.2, Sonic Stage Mastering Studio Audio Filter Custom Preset

I have NO clue what they are (?) and it shows that they are "rarely" used (last date 2007).

          I'm glad, it worked :)

Windows Media Format Software Development Kit (SDK) enables developers to create applications that manipulate digital media stored in files conforming to the Advanced Systems Format (ASF) file structure, so most likely, you don't need it, but I'm not sure, if you can uninstall it. You can give it a try.
Windows Media Player is audio/video player, and can't be uninstalled. It's part of Windows.

All others are parts of Roxio, which is a program for creating/editing CDs, and DVDs. I'd keep it.
