    Need help... *desperate*
    « on: December 12, 2008, 11:24:00 PM »
    i'm new here and i've got one problem i have no idea how to fix...

    so i've got a 1.6Ghzx2 intel dual core pc...
    1.5GB ram... 80GB HDD...
    and everything goes well whenever i use it for gaming online or other stuff that only i usually do...

    my cousins and my other family members also get to use my pc and they do not have any idea what risks are involved in not scanning their portable storage devices...

    here's my problem:

    My Computer icon is missing from my desktop...
    tried to go through display properties then customize desktop but the my computer check box was non-accessible (grayed out)...
    how do i retrieve it???

    When i do get to open "My Computer", it's all empty...
    please help out....

    thnx...

    It's grayed out here?

    When did this happen and exactly what did they do to the computer? (can you ask them)

    Also, if it's the cause of something on their USB Drives, you might want to inspect them yourself.

    What Antivirus programs are you running, as well as what Operating System?

          No, you wont lose any files. This is a completely safe tool within windows.

          You are using XP, right?

          Try this: Click start then choose All Programs. Find Accessories then another box will appear. Move over to System Tools and then to System Restore. Now choose a date before your problem started and Restore back to that date. You will lose any personal settings since that date but they can easily be reapplied.

          Good luck.

          Anyways, more information on System Restore here;
          http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000589.htm

          Remember to restore back a few days before the problem started.

          After only 15 minutes!  ::)

          Folks, if I see a bump,  and I know the answer to the query, I always wait 3 days before posting, if I even bother.

          Bumping is the forum equivalent of elbowing your way to the front of the line (queue).

            well... here's the thing...
            unfortunately...

            when i checked my system restore options...

            i just found out that it was turned off for all drives...
            meaning: no restore points...
            lucky me...

            so...
            any alternatives?...

              what anti virus program are you using?

              Did you install any programs in the week before this happened?

              Can you get into My Computer in safe mode?

                  Well if you scanned your system and nothing is coming up, and it's not finding the virus it might be a little late to get to it.  Try using a different anti virus software and see if it can get rid of it.  If that doesn't solve it, then I would suggest a clean install of your OS to be sure to remove all viruses, only problem is you'll lose all your files on your computer.  Once your computer gets infected to a certain point there is no return, especially if the virus, (which it sounds like) is effecting your "My Computer" and possibly even your system files.  Next time, make sure your anti virus is up and running! and make sure to watch what other people are doing on your computer!  Be careful of what you download, and even what you click on or open up on the internet.  And if you decide to download things, make sure to always scan them before opening them!
