Laptop (VGA) to TV (RCA), confused :S
    « on: December 17, 2008, 02:43:53 PM »
    Hey guys,

I have a laptop Sony VAIO FS640/W. I purchased a VGA to RCA/S-Video cord so I could connect my laptop to the tv and watch movies on my tv from laptop.

This is the cable I bought of ebay:

Once connected the VGA to laptop and RCA cables (using additional RCA cables) to TV I get no signal, even Fn+F7 doesn't work. Although, connecting my desktop monitor directly to laptop works just fine, so it's not a port failure. I haven't tried S-Video because I can't find my S-Video cable.

Any ideas? Suggestions? I'm confused. Thanks in advance.

It's a simple analog tv. It has a simple Audio/Video inputs and a cable plug.
I also have a Rogers Recording Unit which has Aux plugs, I've tried those too and it doesn't work either.

            Thank you truenorth,

I have the S-Video to RCA cable but it has red, green, and blue connectors instead of yellow, red and white. Which one of the red, green, blue is the video one?

Ahh the RGB cables...suprisingly, all three of them are.

Each one carries a different channel though, I cant remember how it works but green carries B/W + green signal i think, red is red components and blue is blue components, something to do with phazes and sine graphs but I dont remember :P

So your TV needs a "dvd" input (most tv's call it this for some reason) to use that cable by the sounds of it.

In my experience, when dealing with Video In, I've always had to place the TV into Video In or FRNT or AUX mode, where the screen would become black(no TV, that is). Only then would it show any output from the video-in ports.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

                Only HDMi out? interesting.

I did manage to find this http://www.trademe.co.nz/Electronics-photography/TVs/Cables-aerials/auction-200248068.htm
but this is from RGB to HDMI...not the other way around.

It seems to me that you are trying to have a TV which is only made to see analog signal (hence you R/W/Y RCA input) be able to interpret a digital signal (the one being generated by the computer). I cannot see how this will be possible without some hardware device to convert the digital to analog BEFORE it gets to the TV. A cable no matter what type won't do this for you. It can be done using an analog TV but you will need a converter hardware device. Of course there would not be an HDMI or DVI input on the TV --it's not digital. truenorth

I am experiencing the same problem.

                      Laptop OUT VGA
Using VGA to S Video/Composite? (Yellow)
                      TV Analog IN

When the i have tried both the S video, and the yellow video cable....and both at the same time.   On the TV is displayed the mini versions of the desktop that are black and white and quite distorted.   Video Card is N vidia and running through a new compaq laptop using vista.   I mainly just want to use my computer as a portable dvd player/possibly some internet streams.

I also have another TV that has a multipin input (possibly called vga also?) that i have not been able to get working.    possibly something going on with display settings?

I don't see how that gizmo at the top of this post could work.  The VGA signal and SCART/RCA signals are incompatible, and a recoder would be needed in between.

Why not just by an S-video (or whatever) PC Card?

Because it's a laptop....and don't know if parts are as easily interchangeable as a desktop

A "PC card" is designed for laptops.  Not all laptops have a PC card slot though, in which case you may need a USB dongle.
