I am thinking of getting a website set up which would not be a simple one but would be on the lines of E Bay as far as interaction and payment facilities go. Where is the best place to go to find a website designer and how can you ensure that they do not pinch your idea for this website? Has anyone a vevry rough idea of how much such a website would cost?

you can always go to sites like freelancher.com and getacoder.com and become the member. these are like highly reputed sites and a bit trustworthy than others (according to me). regarding rates its depends on the resource that you use, everybody bids for the project. so you get to choose the resource at your rate.

What currency? In Euro, my estimate would be at least €25,000-€30,000, if not more. That's about $40,000.

I'm with kpac re cost - it would be a very expensive project IMO.

A lot of web hosts include packages that make interaction and shopping very easy to put together, at very low costs. Lunarpages.com provides hosting that does most of that for less than $10/month. As far as design, you might be able to find a local shop that can do a basic design that implements a premade program from the web host for less than $1000.

Umm, I think a reality check is called for here.  eBay, Inc. in a publicly traded corporation on stock market.  eBay, Inc. has 15,500 employees.  Believe me, you are NOT going to be developing a site anywhere as complex as ebay. 

So, rather than refer to ebay, I suggest you describe what you want to accomplish.  Are you actually thinking of running an auction site, or do you just want a shopping cart feature integrated into your website so that you can sell goods or services online? If it's the latter, I agree with michaewlewis.

I don't think the goal here is to compete with eBay...going by the original post, it sounds like he just wants to have a site with similar features.  Of course, eBay has hundreds of different features, so he'll have to be more specific...

I never mentioned competing with eBay.  I was merely saying eBay is a vast, complex, site, and he's not being realistic if he's actually thinking of developing something on a scale similar to eBay.

Gotcha; I thought you were talking about reaching out to a very large audience much like eBay has.  Either way, it's a huge project.

I am back, I apologise for not coming back sooner but I am afraid I have had a lot of personal problems  . Many thanks to all for the advice. Chris is dead right it is not going to be on the scale of E Bay but will have many of its features. I am hoping, subject to finance, to get this site going this year so any help welcome. I would hope that the site develops and expands. I need someone who knows what he is doing and would  possibly get involved with the site as far as updates and improvements etc. Thanks again to all, Kenny.

Well, my opinion would be to hire a professional company to do it for you.

Obviously, the faster you want it done, the more it will cost.
