    Computer won't turn on
    « on: December 18, 2008, 09:11:59 PM »
    Hello,

My old computer will not turn on no matter what I do. The power button is pressed, and absolutely nothing happens. I recently replaced the power supply to remedy this problem but that didn't work either. The power supply is on, the motherboard's light is on. Nothing power's up however. What could be the issue?

    Thanks

    Specs:
    Gateway Desktop running Win XP
Recently replaced power supply: OCZ StealthXStream 500W

Not sure what other info I can even report on, it's an old computer. (6-7 years I'd say)

Recently, I switched the cpu fan's connector and it seems to be running now... It still does not seem to boot however. The power supply is on, the cpu fan is on, the motherboard light is active, but I am getting no response from the system, not output through the vga port. nothing. Any solutions?

Inspect the motherboard for burst capacitors.

Disconnect everything not required to boot.

Another thing you might want to check out is to see if your power button on the case is plugged into the motherboard

I am working on a similar problem. This is probably a dumb question, but a burst capacitor would be really something easily noticeable, correct? Like burned marks, or disconnections, or even split apart?

If you know what to look for, yup.

Search Google images for burst capacitor, you'll get plenty of variations.
Some aren't as obvious as the others, though.
