Too hot!!!
« on: December 19, 2008, 10:15:27 PM »
Hi Everyone

My CPU and Hard Drive are running extremely hot. On my latest speedfan report, I had a cpu temperature of 68 degrees celsius and a hard drive temperature of 60 degrees celsius. I took the side off of my computer and put a dual window fan in the case and it took the cpu temp down to 49 degrees celsius but my hard drive speed remains at 60 degrees. Any ideas?

Also, I checked all of my fans and they are all running normally.

Hmmmm.....Hard Drives don't normally get that hot....

Try getting an external housefan and just blow at the computer.

Also, what is your start-up temperatures?

I mentioned that I had put a dual window fan in the case and that cooled the processor down about 32 degrees but the hard drive temperature increased. I activate speedfan as soon as I can get to it when I start the computer up and the temperatures are that high.

Have the fans blow at the hard drive and see what happens.

when the fan was blowing at the hard drive, the temperature remained the same. I was going through things I was doing and I cancelled a demo download I had going. Once that stopped the hard drive temperature dropped about 10 degrees

It could be a faulty temperature.

If you feel the Hard Drive's case, is it hot?

It feels pretty warm. My hard drive is at the bottom of my case under a fan that is blowing away from it. I"m going to see if I move the hard drive to the other available slot which is in the path of the small case fan if it will help

Moving the hard drive to this available slot decreased the temperature by about 2 degrees so it didn't help much

Try another external fan and just see how it helps.

Also, if it doesn't feel very hot, it could be a damaged sensor as I said.

I think I'm going to have to agree with you about it being a bad sensor because I've been blowing this fan on the hard drive for about 10 minutes now and the temperature has remained at 60 degree celsius. The Cpu temperature declines but it is still in the red zone for heat

All right.

If it's always been like this, I wouldn't worry.

well this computer I've had for about 2 years and I never installed speed fan on it at all so tonight was the first time I ever scanned the temperatures on this computer. But after a few more minutes with the fan running I have noticed a 3 degree decrease on the HD and it seems to be steadily declining now. As of how long the temperatures have been like this I don't know

Create a good airflow. You're not going to create a good airflow by directly blowing at components.

EG: The hard drive should be mounted in front of the case with a 120MM flan blowing on it and there should be a 120MM fan in the back of the case blowing that hot air out.

That way both your hard drive and processor are cooled. by a decent airflow that has time enough to heat up and  transfer the heat away from the objects in question.

You'll have to invest in a good case, though.

This may sound silly but speedfan is usually pretty accurate...i just fixed a machine where the HDD temps wer in the range you described.
Turns out that drive was going South and i had just enough time to clone it and save the data.
2 days later it was dead.
DLoad and run the manuf. HDD diagnostics to see if it's healthy...
Re-describe how hot it feels to the touch...would you leave your fingers on it's surface longer than 3 minutes ? ?
If not speedfans #'s are probably accurate.
