Steam Damage?

 I was using my laptop to listen to itunes when I was taking a shower, like I normally do. However, this time, the computer started skipping the song, not literally skipping a song and moving on to the next one, but fracturing it, like a broken CD that was scratched. I took it out of the room and shut it down, and when I restarted it the computer was operating way slower than normal. When I looked at the task manager the CPU has been spastically using up to 55 percent of the processor speed when I was on my desktop with no applications running, leading me to believe that the computer's speakers aren't damaged. Does anyone know what's going on and why? The computer has an Intel 2 Core duo processor and is running windows XP.

If that was the case it wouldn't work at all.


shut it down and leave it in a dry place for around 8 hours, then see if you have the same symptoms.

I did turn it off and leave it in a dry place for 8 hours, that was my initial reaction. However, that has not helped.

It's probably simply a coincidence that it happened at that time; I recommend starting a post in the viruses and malware forum, discussing the symptoms; sounds to me like something is hogging an entire core.

It doesn't sound like it's water damaged.

I agree. It sounds like another process is running in the background that is eating up all the processing power.
This doesn't necessarily mean it was damaged by water.

I put out a topic in the virus section, but I followed all of the anti-virus steps and haven't found any malware. They haven't responded to my logs yet so I haven't given up hope, but I'm beginning to wonder if it isn't virus related. Is there anything else it could be? This is just a food for thought question at this point because I still haven't gotten any input from the virus people.

The Malware Removal Specialists are a bit bogged down right now due to overwhelming demand...i'd be patient and see what they find.

Oh yeah I understand entirely. I'm willing to wait, but this is the first virus that has ever slipped past Norton and TeaTimer for me,  so I'm just worried the hardware might be damaged and it isn't a virus. Don't take that post as me dissing the moderators. No offense was meant.

No offense taken...since it's a laptop you may want to consider ditching Norton for another FREE alternative which will free up some resources.

I have had Norton on this computer for ages though, it only started that fateful day while listening to iTunes. Could Norton suddenly go ballistic like that?

No not neccessarily...
But you and the machine will run better
