    « on: December 20, 2008, 09:02:52 AM »
I am running a ga-vm800pmc mouther bord with a 2Duo CPU em4500 2.20ghz. Nvidia GeForce 7300 gt. the bord has 4 mem slots 2 ddr2 and 2 ddr1, u can only run one or the outher not both. Max is 2 gig unbuffed mem. im trying to run 2 gig ddr2 533 unbuffed but can only run 1 gig because 2 1 gig stucks actuly makes it alittle more than 2 gig. the moutherbord only alows exactly 2 gig.does any one know a way to to cap the memory at 2 gig? my os is xp ser2...

well after reading from u all i went and did a memtest the second 1 gig ram was bad. brand new, wouldnt have thought that. thanks for all the help from everyone  and big thanks to Patio. next time i buy all test my self thanks agen all

2 1GB sticks makes 2GB, simple maths.  Where are you getting the impression that 2 1Gb sticks make more than 2GB?
What happens if you try to boot with two 1GB sticks?

My assumption would be that the board says it supports 2GB, and standard metric prefixes denote GB as 1000, not 1024- so the maximum as they see it is 2000MB.

Additionally, RAM is sold with markings indicating their size in MB; in this case, 1024 for the 1GB.

Thus, they come up with RAM that is 2048MB, and the board maximum of 2000MB.

Just a wild guess; but it is likely the case.

Did you try telling it a joke and when it's off guard, quickly plug in the memory?

      Worked for me.

think you'll find just about every board manufacture says something to that effect, and they
actuall use some memory for the system board resources so the max. they see is 2048 minus system mem...

you are plugging them into the correct slots as specified by the manual???

What does the MBoard manual say ? ?
Are the RAM speeds within specs ? ?
I suspect there are more hidden details to this issue...

what I said before was my thought process to understand the misunderstanding.

Your board supports 2GB. 2GB is 2048, not 2000. Especially when dealing with RAM. my ramblings seemed to indicate that your assumption was correct; thankfully for you however, it is almost assuredly not the case, and 2GB of RAM is 2048MB.

I find it extremely hard to fathom that a board would cap out at 2000MB ...
That being said i would DLoad and run MemTest...let it run at least 2 hours and test each stik individually...
