Welcome to the forums.
To help you, we'll need a little more information.

What sort of budget do you have?
How much RAM do you have now?
What's the upgrade for, i.e. what improvements do you want to see?

Wait. You want to upgrade a 2.4 Ghz machine?

    Upgrade?

Not that it's my job to question upgrading, but I would seriously look at whether that money could be better spent somewhere else.

But the RAM on the other hand, I would say that if you have anything less than 2 gb, absolutely. How many RAM slots do you have?

My Google search says 4 slots

The most common Quad-core CPU that is better for you is the Q6600 which is the same speed, 2.4Ghz but with 4 times the cache of your current CPU...

CPU speed matters nothing these days.
    A 1.7Ghz Core 2 Duo would beat a 3.2Ghz P4 Extreme to a pulp.

If you are looking for a performance increase...I suggest RAM or a graphics card upgrade. (Yes a graphics card)
I say this because a better graphics system can increase 2d speeds too (folder windows and everything)
But RAM would be the best option if you can.

Well OK maybe a dual core 500mhz would be really crap but what I meant was "you can't judge a CPU by its Ghz rating" anymore.

That was an article on Intel about the new Core systems

We'll yeah, though not on the same chip...
Some old Slot-1 Mobos could take 2 CPU carts and so effectively you had a dual-core pentium/2/3

    anyways apologies for threadjacking

That's pretty neat. I wonder if XP can work with that. Since the slot 1 processor went to 1Ghz, I guess you could put two of those in there and still have a decent enoug machine for today's work. It even supports up to 2GB oF RAM.

Hey, I'm going to be on the look out for one of those.. Wonder if I purchasing 4x 512MB SDRAM is worth it, though heh.

Not worried about the minimal specifications, just curious how Windows XP treats those two processors! It is not the same as a dual core processor. You'd probably need XP professional.
