    Extending a small hard drive.
    « on: December 22, 2008, 07:36:29 AM »
I have a PC here which only has a 3GB FAT32 hard-drive and that is nearly full of operating system (Windows 2000 Pro SP4) and productivity software. The plan is this. I want to : -

       1) Add a new physical disk and format it to NTFS,
       2) Convert the current drive to NTFS.
       3) Convert both disks to dynamic.
       4) Convert them into one spanned volume.

Is this plan possible, or am I somewhere in cloud cuckoo land?

    Thanks

I'd get a bigger hard drive and an image program such as Norton Ghost to copy the OS from one disk to another.

If the 3GB disk breaks down (It must be -ancient-) and you do what you're planning on, you'll be in a world of hurt

I agree with Raptor as well...and to be honest i find disk-spanning a waste of time and effort.
I just add storage as i need it.

      Cheers,

I was beginning to think that my plan was a little excessive. Personally, I'd rather chuck the PC and buy a new one. But, I don't call the shots around here.

      I'll consider the ghosting idea.

      Thanks again 8)

Also keep in mind that all drive manuf. have "cloning" tools FREE in their respective drive diagnostics software.

Is there any way I can convert the drive from FAT32 to NTFS without upsetting the data?

Yes but what program and where in that program? I've never seen this in their diagnostic software. Do I need something else?

I must be using outdated programs. I'll go have a look at it soon.

Does it work properly with NTFS?
