downloading programs/files can be painful

Having problems downloading stuff.
When I click to download something,like say a Java update, I get this:

C:\docume~1\"name"\locals~1\temp\"bunch of #'s and letters" . exe   could not be saved because source file could not be read

This is on a laptop,XP w/sp2, wireles connection,connectivity is fine,can surf the web fine. Just downloading seems to be giving me fits with this non-coded error on either IE or FF


Any help is appreciated

What security program(s) do you use?
Did you try downloading in Safe Mode with Networking?
