general protection fault

In Windows XP: WordPerfect 6.1:"WPwin6.1 caused General Protection Fault in module WPWIN6.1 EXE at 0093.2814."  A second message: "Unable to initialize."  I cannot find my installation discs.   If I get a more recent version of WP, can I install it so that only program files are changed, but the data is saved?   Many thanks.
