    First Computer Build Won't Start
    « on: January 05, 2009, 05:47:00 AM »
I press the power button and I get nothing, no lights no beeps.
I bought all the parts from newegg. Here are the specs:

    Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor Model BX80562Q6600 - Retail
    Item #: N82E16819115017

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31500341AS 1.5TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive (bare drive) - OEM

GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply -

Maybe I was too ambitious for my first build. I made sure all the connections are secure. Any suggestions of what I should try next?

4 pin ATX power plug in the MBoard ? ?
The same for the vid card ? ?
Did you install the MBoard standoffs ? ?
Remember to use Thermal paste ? ?
Was this a new or used PSU ? ?

The 4 pin is in the motherboard and another for the vid card. Standoffs were preinstalled in case. I used thermal paste and the PSU is new

Although Corsair generally makes good PSU's it may have been DOA out of the box...
Do you have another you can swap in there ? ?
Also the Q6600 is a bit tricky to get the heatsink seated properly...the thumbscrew type fasteners should have the slots lined up perpindicular to the heatsink with a 90~ twist to secure them...
      Was the 6600 oriented properly ? ?
Just a few other things to check.

I think the heatsink is in properly. It is in nice and secure and it would only fit one way on my motherboard. lol

I'm getting the impression that it is the PSU. The fan never spin up at all even when I unplugged it and plugged it back in.

Right now all I have is a laptop, so I want to be sure before I run out to the store and buy another part. I don't want to have to wait a week to get a new part from newegg.com.

Would this power supply be a good replacement?
It is one of the few name brands that is available to me locally.

I wish I could, but unfortunately that's not an option. I just need to know if that PSU is decent enough.

The True Power line for Antec is very decent...

Thanks, I can't borrow anything because my friends are Mac or laptop people. I guess I'll be going to the store.

              Best of luck to you...
One question not answered was the CPU orientation...it's a pinless design...did you double check it ? ?

Is it possible that the the CPU could sit comfortably in the wrong direction? If so, how would I know for sure?

The Q6600 diagrams in the Intel book show how...
There are 2 semi-circle notches opposite each other on the outer edge of the die...

I think i installed it correctly. My gut is telling me it is the PSU. I've replaced parts on old computers in the past and I even had a mother board die on me, but the PSU still fired up. If putting in a new PSU doesn't do the trick then I'll have to start praying to the computer gods. :)
