Confused by a Windows XP re-install

I tried to re-install Windows XP from a cd onto my uncle's Dell Inspirion lap top. It will not get to the desktop, but instead goes to a gray screen with white writing saying I can boot into Safe Mode or Repair. When trying to repair, the computer says I am missing system32/directory/isapnp.sys. Any ideas how to fix this?
