Hi! I'm a newbie, & I have a problem I know you`ve heard before, my PC had been acting up recently (slow-ups, freezes, etc.) & I had experienced a virus situation (cleared up by AVG), so i've had a few problems, lol. One day though, when I turned my PC on, my desktop wouldn't appear, I went to safe mode, no desktop there either, so I rebooted to my PC start-up point & now I have no sound. I try to install a sound driver, Windows tells me it doesn't work on the system I have. My PC is a hp pavilion a317x.

Well since I rebooted to the start point, I haven't had most of those problems, except for the audio issues, which i've tried to resolve with a new audio driver, but Windows won't accept it because it`s not compatible with my system. I think it has something to do with my motherboard, but i`m not sure how to match that to my drivers. Any ideas?

I have a pretty good idea what my problem is (some chipset/motherboard deal) but i`m not sure how to solve it (don't have the CD that came with my PC i'm sure).

Why not let us in on your suspicions of what it is...
Chances are you will eventually need a Windows CD...

When I try to install an audio driver, I get a message "the driver is not compatible with your system" or something like that. When I go to my device manager & reach the audio display page (forgot the exact title), it says I have no audio device. Any clues? Thanks for the interest.

Not sure about your other problems, but perhaps your copy of Microsoft's UAA got corrupted somehow. Download it at: http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/SOUND-CARD/OTHER-SOUNDCARDS/Microsoft-UAA-Bus-Driver-for-High-Definition-Audio.shtml, install and see if you can install the sound drivers.

I just installed it, & still nothing, though I now have a RealTek file on my desktop & the Config folder in it is empty. Could that have anything to do with it?

If, in Device Manager, audio adapter is not listed, and there is nothing listed under "Unknown devices", most likely, the sound chip is dead.

Under "Sound, video and game controllers", I have the Legacy Audio & Video Capture Drivers listed in addition to Media Control Devices, Realtek AC'97 Audio & 4 Unknown Devices (with ! points next to all of them) & a Video Codecs listing. That's normal, right?

No, it's not. You shouldn't have any unknown devices listed on normally working computer.

I downloaded it (chipset driver) & Windows selects the "I do not accept" option for me when I open it & get the License Agreement. Should I go ahead anyway?

1. Download the driver package.

2. Double-click on the icon for the driver package downloaded in step 1, and then click NEXT.

3. Accept the terms in the HP license agreement, and then click NEXT.

4. Click OK to continue. The original drivers are now stored in the C:\HP\Drivers\Chipset folder.

5. If Device Manager does not start automatically, use the following steps. Otherwise go to step 6

a. Click Start.

b. Right-click My Computer, and then select Properties.

c. Click the Hardware tab, and then click the Device Manager button.

6. Click the + (plus) sign next to "Other Devices".

7. Right-click the device you want to update, and then select Update Driver.

8. Click NEXT to install the software automatically.

9. Click FINISHED to complete the installation.

Right click on both, Legacy, and Realtek audio drivers, click "Properties", "Driver" tab, and uninstall both drivers.
Restart computer, download this driver: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=pv-17188-2&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=366140&os=228&lang=en, and install it.

After I came back from the restart (or actually, the PC), I got a message saying the audio controller had been found. We'll see.

Now, it says I need to put it in the Manager.

Yes, however, my PC had a crash (it's recovered now). Because the driver I guess didn't match up well with my system.

This is what I'd do...
Go back here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=366140
Download, and install all drivers listed in Original Drivers section.
We'll see how many yellow "!" marks will be left in Device Manager after that.

However, we still have to keep in mind, that the sound chip may be simply dead.

ETA, HP tells me I need to be logged into my PC as an administrator to install the update (i`m logged in as owner).

I rebooted to the position the PC was when bought (I get pop-ups for Norton Anti-Virus 2003 when I sign on, which I haven't installed). Guess that wasn't such a great idea now, lol. BTW, i'm told I have no audio mixers when I tried to troubleshoot in "Volume Control".

I just rebooted it to it's original state using the F10 trick Broni. Why shouldn't I take it somewhere AzNV ? Unless you just refer to "Geek Squads" ?

Maybe if I explain a few things about my system, it'll help, I have a Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition & my Audio Adapter is Intel 82801DB ICH4 - AC'97 Audio Controller [B-0]. Don't know if it`ll help much, but i'm trying to figure out what Audio Driver is most compatible with my system so I can get my missing sound back.

Oh, my Motherboard Name: TriGem Glendale & Motherboard Chipset: Intel Brookdale-G i845GL.
