    Help
    « on: January 13, 2009, 02:57:38 PM »
    Hello,

My problem is that my computer freezes usually directly after startup. The cursor is still responsive, but I am unable to click on anything. Therefore, I am forced to hold down the power button until it shuts off. Also, a new problem has started ocurring. My computer now randomly shuts down on its own from time to time. I recently talked to a friend who stated my video driver might be corrupted and said i should download the driver from the Gateway Web Site. I downloaded it and ran into a problem during installation. I got to step 7 where it said open up device manager and click on the plus sign where you want to update the driver. Where do i install it? What plus sign do i click on? I am totally lost. System restore fails to accomplish anything in the fact that it wont let me go to a date farther back than yesterday. Also, I do not have the boot CD needed for a System recovery.  I called gateway and they said there is a way to do it, but they charge outrageous prices. Do you know how? This problem started a few weeks ago and has been a major problem since.

Please, I will try anything and will GREATLY appreciate some help.

By the way, I run on Windows XP

    Thanks for helping.

Most of the time the computer will be fine in safe mode, but on occasion it will freeze at the "windows is starting up" blue screen. It is XP home.

Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
      msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

      Click on Startup tab.
      Click Disable all

      Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
      Click Disable all.

      Click OK.
      Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

      Any better?

        I followed all steps.

I restarted in normal mode, but while in the windows is starting up blue screen appeared, my computer restarted itself again.....

Now, I can't get past the starting up screen. It just keeps restarting....

Also it I got a message clicking disable all in the services tab, The message is saying "an access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes."

This message continues to appear even when  I am logged on as Administrator

Open Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\system32, find msconfig.exe file. Hold SHIFT, and right click on the file.
Click Run the program as the following user, and then type the user name, password, and domain of the administrator account.
        Try to disable services again.

          I don't see a msconfig.exe file.

          There is an msconf.dll file

All of the files in windows/system32 are .dll

Open Windows Explorer. Go Tools>Folder Options>View tab, put a checkmark next to Show hidden files, and folders.

The only options under tools that I can view are Map Network Drive, Disconnect Network Drive, and Synchronize.

How do I view hidden Icons?

Yes, those are the only choices. Is it possible to do a full system recovery w/o the boot CD?

Missing "Folder options" is often caused by an infection.
We'll' try to figure it out.

              Let's start with something else.
If your computer can stay up long enough in Normal Mode...
              Download HijackThis:
              http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download
by clicking on Download HijackThis Installer
              Install, and run it.
              Post HijackTHis log.

But also likely to be in administrator options. (don't ask how I know...school computers have the Folder Options thing disabled so kids can't mess with the computers...or so they think ;))

See, if it'll restore "Folder options".

Don't forget to check your brother computer. If file sharing is enabled, disable it, so there is no contact between computers.
