It is part of western history. Piracy has been glorified as an part of our past that has established the world in which we now live. Somewhere in you history books find that the British promoted piracy at one time because they thought it was in their best interest.
In modem times 'piracy' of copyright material has been justified by business firms that wish to promote themselves and get ahead of their rivals in the free market. However they do not outright say this in public statements. A company that makes DVD R/W drives will defend the rights of any consumer to make copies of anything for private use inside his own family. They will object to anything that would make it hard to copy material without permission, saying it would make the products to complicated and expensive. Yet the technology is there.
