Author Topic: dvd-cd rom would not play audio cds (Read 10902 times)

Hello,

This is my first time here and I hope to get some answers. Here's the problem: I had to perform a system repair on my Dell due to virus infestation. After that my dvd-cd rom stopped recognizing certain audio cds ( would recognize store bought cds but not "home made" ones although it did before). I tried to uninstall drive and restart with no improvement. Could you please help me with suggestions. Thank you, Gabi

What exactly do you mean by "stopped recognizing certain audio cds". What happens when you put home made CD in?
Does the same CD play anywhere else?

Broni,
The cds in question play everywhere else and they used to play on this DVD/CD before the system repair. When put in the DVD/CD nothing happens, the light blinks for a couple of seconds, like it's working, then stops. The D drive icon, the DVD/CD drive, in My Computer remains unchanged as opposed to showing "audio cd" or ''pictures", or whatever the case is. If I try to open it it just shows the drive is empty. First, go to Device Manager, and uninstall the drive. Restart computer, and it'll be automatically reinstalled.
If the above didn't help...
Try one of these:
1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
Restart computer.
or...
2. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
Restart computer.
or...
3. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

Hi,

Just logged in to say that none of the solutions provided worked. I noticed that there are 2 Primary Channels and 1 Secondary Channel in IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. I unistalled all 3 of them and all 3 of them reinstalled. What, if anything, might this mean, that there are 2 Primary Channels? I am considering reinstalling the OS at this point. You may try, but you have to consider, that the drive may be simply falling.

The only 100% bullet-proof method, is to install it in another computer.

I don't have the possibility to install it in another computer, but this solution gave me the idea to replace the actual drive. I visited other forums too and the drive in question is a problematic one.
I need help finding a new compatible driver. Where do I look and how do I go about it? I intend to do the uninstalling and installing of new one myself. Am I being realistic in my intentions cause I am not at all computer savvy? Thanks in advance, Gabi

I assume, you mean "drive", not "driver".
If this is desktop, any type of drive will do. They start under $30.

Thanks, I got the message! I'll start looking around and I suppose the questions regarding the installation instructions and the degree of difficulty could be answered once I pick a store and , hopefully, I'll run into a knowledgeable tech not only one that wants to make a sale. A dual-layer DVD burner should run you about 35 or 40 Bucks...
They are universal and quite easy to install however i would suggest having someone who has done it before you assist since it's your first time...
As always whenever working inside the case remove all power sources and take anti-static precautions.

Total elapsed time 10 to 20 minutes.

It just occurred to me that the CDs I can't play now, after system repair operation I mentioned in the beginning of post, are MP3 format. So, maybe the ability to read this type of file was lost after system repair. Where do I look? I read a little about codecs but I am not sure, like I said I am a novice.
