Desktop Malware and MORE! Please help...
    « on: January 08, 2009, 11:26:32 PM »
My Norton Anti-Virus expired a few weeks ago and since then I've acquired new friends.  I have installed a new Norton 360 but still have all this great company.  A few of my symptoms are:

    -Slow system/freezing

    -black desktop with malware alert

-When my browser goes to open a computer file such as uploading a photo or attaching a fie IE completely shuts down.

    -malware pop up and scan

-after scanning with the recommended programs and reboot my computer freezes upon reboot so I have to shut it down more than a few times to get it going, thus reinstalling all the malware I just deleted.

-oddly enough my keyboard response just got really slow and I'm having to retype a lot of words.

I know there isn't much hope for my computer but I'd like to do what I can before I gut it.  Here are my logs remember I can't attach them sorry :(

woops guess I can't post that much...what should I do next?  I can't upload the files to anything without a bulk uploader.  I will save them to a jump drive and take em to work with me tomorrow.  Alright...thanks :)

I found the source of all your problems. Norton 360.

Get rid of it using this tool:

Even if you want Norton, remove it and see if the computer returns to normal.
A lot of problems have been known to occur with Norton.

will try although I'm a little doubtful or rather more scared :) since it seemed the problems were worse and malware had control of my system when it wasn't installed.  Once I finally got it installed I was able to do more for longer periods of time without it shutting down on me.  What do ya think??  go for it?

I agree. There are many (better) free solutions available.

      Avast!
      Avira
      AVG

      Personally, I'd go for Avast!.

In my opinion (and in my experience), those free antivirus products are MUCH BETTER than Norton 360.

Norton 360- letting malware into your computer from all directions!

IMO the only time a AV program should be paid for, especially on a subscription (read, they keep sucking money out of you to maintain basic functionality) basis, would be AV's deployed across a network.

And even then, they should be specifically designed for the network topography. Instead of running scans on each computer, the admin should be able to set all of them scanning at once and showing all the results at once.

How I suddenly broke off into how AV programs should be designed I don't know. In any case, I agree with Carbon.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.
