    i had this problem before-
i hadn't changed any spec though.
it was EITHER a motherboard or CPU (yes i mean processor) problem
i never got round to checking. (sorry about that)
i'll be testing it all in a week or so- the motherboard is still worth quite alot

Disconnect the monitor's data cord from the mobo and plug the power
cord to wall outlet . Turn on the monitor and if you see a raster then
it's good. Most monitors will do this.

Except LCD monitors, which don't have rasters.

Well, I know what the problem is now.  Fried the motherboard.  Swapped my PSU out with his new one and everything works fine on my computer.  His motherboard is a microATX type.  Mine's a little newer.  Was led to believe that the PSU was backwards-compatible, but it's designed for ATX 2.2.  So I'm getting him a new motherboard.  Thanks for all the input, and sorry for wasting yous guys time.
