Building my first Computer
« on: January 19, 2009, 10:02:45 PM »
I decided to build my first machine, and I have some questions regarding piecing it all together. I hope my questions don't try your patience. :-\

Thanks in advance.

Here are the parts I've bought...

ASUS P6T Deluxe LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor

OCZ Platinum 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

BFG Tech BFGE981024GX2E GeForce 9800 GX2 1GB
(512MB per GPU) 512-bit (256-bit per GPU) GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video
Card - Retail

850 watt PSU

Ram: The voltages of the modules I bought were at 1.8v, but I think the mobo/cpu I bought only allows 1.65v, this article makes it seem pretty serious for the CPU. (920 i7 nephalem)
http://arstechnica.com/journals/hardware.ars/2008/10/06/high-memory-voltages-could-kill-nehalem-cpus
Is there a way I can run the modules at 1.65v or do I have to send them back?
If so do you change the voltages in the bios? How would you change that without booting up and risk damaging something?

CPU: Does this CPU come with thermal paste preapplied? Would this be sufficient if I were to overclock in the future? Or would you recommend I buy this Arctic Silver 5 paste?

Cooling - I'm concerned that my system is going to run very hot, and I don't want to damage anything.
If I don't overclock anything, are the OEM fans that came with my mobo/cpu/gpu sufficient or do I need to get more? I'm thinking purchasing/installing a water cooling system later.

After I solve these issues am I free to install the cpu/plug every thing together and boot up safely?

Thanks for your help! :)

you should be able to adjust the voltages in your motherboard's bios, but at the cost of higher latency. when/if you do change the voltage, do so in as little increments as possible (my board allows this in .025v increments).

the cpu doesn't have the thermal paste pre-applied, but it should come supplied with some. however, if you think you're going to need it for overclocking down the road, then go for the arctic silver.

i wouldn't be too concerned about cooling until you've tested your system. run some tests (like 3dmark, memtest86, play some games, run multiple programs, etc.) to get an idea of how hot your system runs, then decide if you need to dole out extra cash for some extra cooling. make sure you get a computer case with good airflow. i recommend the antec 900/1200 or the cooler master haf 932.

in my opinion, water cooling isn't worth the risk. should you have a faulty water block or something, then...well, you know. ;)

take the cautious route and you should be fine.
