fireman:

Try removing the Mute settings:

1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Multimedia applet.
3. In Multimedia Properties, click the Audio tab and make sure "Show volume control on the taskbar" is checked, then click OK.
4. Double-click the volume control on the taskbar.
5. In Volume Control, make sure Playback is checked, then click Options > Properties.
6. In the Properties dialog box under "Show the following volume controls" check all that are listed.
7. Click OK and OK.
8. Back in Volume Control, remove the checkmark from all Mute checkboxes, and adjust the volume slider for each to at least the middle setting.
9. Close Volume Control.
10. Close Control Panel.
11. Restart your computer and test the volume, now.

Fireman:

Were you ever able to listen to streaming audio on this computer?  If so, what changed prior to the sounds of silence?  (Did you upgrade to version 7.1 from version 6.0 of Media Player?  Did you install RealOne Player, Winamp or QuickTime?  Did you add a new sound card or use Windows Update to upgrade DirectX?)

Let us know.

I use to be able to stream until I upgraded interntet exporer to 6.0 after I discovered that I could not stream I then upgraded to media player 7.1 with no results. I then downloaded real player and I can stream with that.

Fireman:

Do you have Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition (SE)?  To check your version of Windows 98, go to your Desktop and right-click on the "My Computer" icon. Look at the General tab where it says "System: Windows 98." If the next line is a version number (such as 4.10.1998), you are running Windows 98. If the next line says "Second Edition," you are running Windows 98 SE.

Fireman:

U R correct; Windows Media Player 7.1 is as high as one may go with Windows 95 or the first edition of Windows 98.  It may be that some streaming audio requires a later Media Player version than 7.1.  Try contacting the Web site administrator of a site with which you are having trouble listening to their streaming audio broadcast.  Ask her what is the earliest version of Media Player that the site supports.

To troubleshoot further, try running the DXdiag tool to see if your DirectX is the problem:

1. Click Start > Run and type dxdiag in the Run box and press ENTER.

2. In the DirectX Diagnostic Tool under "System Information" note the version of DirectX installed and let us know.  For example, Windows 98 SE on one of my systems has "DirectX 6.1a (4.06.03.0518)" listed.

3. In the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, click the tabs, one at a time (beginning with the DirectX Files tab), and take note of any problems found that are listed under Notes.

4. At the Music tab, click the "Test DirectMusic" button and follow the instructions.

5. If that doesn't help, then click The Troubleshoot button at the More Help tab.  Follow the instructions of the Windows 98 Troubleshooters wizard.

If the Web site supports Media Player 7.1 and the DirectX Diagnostic Tool does not find the cause of the problem, let us know.  Perhaps adjusting the settings of your firewall (if any) or running the Windows 98 System File Checker utility may help.  One of us will suggest what to try next.
