computer hangs up apon starting

I have a gateway laptop 4525vg; intel cpu m 1.5ghz; win xp pro 32- bit; 512 ram.
I installed a new copy of win xp pro on my laptop worked fine for awhile and now it hangs when I started it. I receive an error message <windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe please re-install file.
Can someone please help re-install this file. I have my windows xp pro cd.

I can't get into windows at all. This is the message I get. I do have a virus program installed norton antivirus 2003 Professional edition.

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
<Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe please install a copy of the above file"

Did you try Safe Mode?

Yes. I select safe mode, safe mode with networking and not happens. It just goes to a black blank screen and hangs.

Hey, checked out the link you posted I did all the steps. The only problem is that when I am prompted to select a valid Windows installation, there isn't one to pick.

I checked out the other link you send me. No installation were found so I guess that means that my data or partition on my drive is too corrupted. What can I do next or do I need a new hard drive.
