    window stuck on desktop
    « on: February 03, 2009, 06:31:33 PM »
I have a fairly new (less than a year old) Dell laptop with Windows XP. Awhile back I attempted to put the Creative Zen software into my pc for an mp3 player only to realize it wasn't compatible with XP.

I have uninstalled and removed every trace of the software, yet a window pops up every time my pc turns on from that software asking me to register my product.

Clicking the red "X" doesn't take it away, neither does actually going through with the registration. The best I can do is drag it to a corner of the screen so it isn't an eyesore :(

Please if anyone has any idea how to get rid of this window, please give me step by step instructions. Thank you in advance.

    Download HijackThis:
    http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download
by clicking on Download HijackThis Installer
    Install, and run it.
    Post HijackTHis log.

    We'll see what's starting there.

      Open HJT again, and checkmark:
      - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTRegRun] C:\Windows\CTRegRun.EXE
      Click "Fix checked" button.

Restart computer, and you should be good to go.

        I was excited for a minute :(
I clicked it and "fixed it". i restarted my pc. and there it popped up, again...
i did the scan again and noticed it was still there, i tried the process again but its not doing anything.
when i start HijackThis i keep getting the message shown in the attached picture. maybe its something to do with that? though i already am the admin :/
In case the picture isnt clear, it says:

For some reason your system denied write access to the Host file if any hijacked domains are in this file, Hijack may NOT be able to fix this.
If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click start, Run and type
        notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
and press enter. find the line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them.
Save the file as 'hosts.' (with quotes), and reboot.
For Vista, simply exit HijackThis, right click on the HijackThis icon, choose 'Run as asdministrator'.

I do have Vista. I apologize, I believe I said XP before.

        We'll get it, don't worry.

Disable Windows Defender, as it'll interfere with cleaning process:
           - Open Windows Defender by clicking the Start, clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Defender.
           - Click Tools
        then...

        ++ Windows XP:
            - Click General Settings
            - Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
            - Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection
            - After you uncheck this, click on the Save button
            - Close Windows Defender

        ++ Windows Vista:
           - Click Options
           - Under Administrator options, clear the Use Windows Defender check box, and then click Save.

Enable Windows Defender, when all cleaning is done.

Right click on HJT icon, and click "Run as Administrator".
Delete offending entry one more time.
Restart computer, run HJT, and see, if it's still there.

I turned Windows defender off. When I right click the icon and click 'run as admin' it just tells me the program is running already. I'm wondering if I'm deleting the offending entry correctly. this is what i'm looking at.

No, no. This is your "hosts" file. It looks fine. Leave it alone.
          Close HJT, if it's open.
Right click on HJT icon, and click "Run as Administrator"...
          ...and checkmark:
          - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTRegRun] C:\Windows\CTRegRun.EXE
          Click "Fix checked" button.

Restart computer, and post new HJT log.

            OK.
            Click Start.
            In "Start search" type in:
            regedit
            Hit Enter.

            Registry Editor will open.
            Navigate to:
            HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
In right pane, you'll see CTRegRun entry.
Right click on it, click Delete.
            Disregard any warnings.

            Restart computer.
            Report on progress.
