Dial-up of course involves a Dial up modem, which uses standard phone technology to contact your ISP. each time you connect, it is given a IP address by the ISP.

Of course, there are a few more details involved with the whole digital to analog conversion and error correction, but that's a problem with various new uses for old technology.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

Protocol used by dial up is not the same as used by the internet. But your computer will get into the Internet and have all that it needs to be on the Internet. The Service Provider has the equipment that does this. You can get dial-up service very cheap, if that is what you want.

Why did you ask about the IP? Normally you would not need to know anything about the IP being used by your connection. The next time you use the dial-up the IP may be different. This question is often asked by those hoping the IP address has some special benefit. The general answer is no, it does not do you any good knowing the IP. It is not a lottery. No lucky IP available.

I think you will find that some Dial-up Internet Service Providers (ISP) will actually give you the same IP address by looking at your connecting MAC address...
However, this is very uncommon. Many services like AOL have you go through an automatic proxy. Many websites ban this for two reasons:
    1, easy and annoying proxy
    2, AOL is evil.

You should avoid ISP's that make you go through a proxy. Proxies via that method will not give you a more secure connection.

You do not have to go with AIL or JUNO or any big firms.
    Just Google cheap dial up
and you will find firms that have numbers
    inside your local dialing area.

    Here is just one:
    $4.75 Unlimited Dial Up
    No Contracts, No Setup Fees
No Credit Cards, Free Tech Support!

To find it, do the Google.  ;D

WARNING. Make sure your phone service is
    unlimited local calls.
If you need a fixed IP, there are ways to work around that.
