Modem connecting at 28
« on: April 20, 2005, 11:42:49 AM »
Greetings all, I have a DELL Latitude running windows XP with Intel pentium II, 266 mgz, 128 mb ram, and an xircom ethernet 100 + modem 56. My problem is I cannot connect at 49 speed that my other computer connects at using the same isp and phone line. I have gone into control panel - modems and set the connect speed to the highest setting (well above 56), anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance for any help,
..John

First off.... Your computer must be VERY slow... You are SUPPOSED to have at LEAST 256 MB RAM for Windows XP... Maybe that is why? Also, is this a wireless connection?

Hello friend, how are you? There are many reasons of this problem.
First of all make sure that your telephone cable has no extra joints. In other words. it must have very least number of joints. For best results, try to make it only 1.
Second thing is that, make sure that before connecting to the internet, all telephone sets you have are disconnected to the telephone line.
Thirdly, make sure that the settings of you connection is compatoble with your ISP.
Last thing is that, you must have an updated drivers for your modem.
Another thing is that. the telephone line must be connected to "LINE" socket at the back of the modem rather "PHONE".
Do take care of you and others and be happy.

Thanks all for the replys and help. In answer to the questions: Not wireless using the phone line, computer does not seem slow when not on the internet. I will check the line/phone socket...

    Are you positive it's a 56k modem and not a 28k?
