Hard drive
« on: April 23, 2005, 11:11:04 AM »
I have two computers in different geographical locations.
One is new and the other is about 3 years old.
Since I spend six months at one location and then 6 months at the other I would like to carry the  hard drive
back and forth.  This would save me the expence of
paying for 2 antiviral programs & having to transfer
extensive records from one computer to the other.
Does anyone know if this is possible? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

grumps......Sounds like the perfect solution for you would be a laptop .......... Take it with you and then you always have what you want .

Since the computer are not identical hardware (right?), the hard drive will need at least 3 partitions.
    1.  OS and Programs for Computer #1
    2.  OS and Programs for Computer #2
    3.  Data, shared between both.
Then you need a removable caddy for your internal hard drive.

Correct identical hardware. Also identical programs.
Os #1 computer is xp, # 2 is xp pro. I thought the OS was in HD and I could just move that between computers. What is a caddy?
    Sorry I'm a relative novice.

    Thanks for your help

I would like to end up with one hard drive that I take back and forth between computers. I don't care if I loose everything in computer#2. If I understand correctly I could do that without having to partition the hard drive.
    Thanks again for your help

If they are truly identical then you can move the HD between the two without any tricky partitioning. but any upgrades would need to be done on both.

You even want to make sure the same cards are in the same slots.  Windows sees a slot change as new hardware, but should plug and play because the drivers are still there.  So, "identical" means identical in every respect, except for the monitor, as long as the same resolutions are supported on both monitors.

Yes, I apologize for the mistake. In my first post
I said one computer was 3 years old so I am assuming
    they have different motherboards.
    Sorry if I confused things.
