    administrator password invalid
    « on: February 10, 2009, 02:13:09 PM »
I'm trying to repair XP through the recovery console and it's asking for the administrator password. I enter it and it's telling me in's invalid. It keeps asking for one even if I disable the password.

    Now what?

We are not going to tell you how to hack the password.

If you are sure you did not enter a password.
I will give you the default password for the
     recovery console in XP.
I have a spare one you can use.
Use this only if you are sure that neither you or anyone else set the administrator password for that computer.
If that is true. scroll down to see the answer.

I not longer use it, so I will let you have it.

Please study the box below a see what is in the box.

    What is it the Box?
    Code: [Select]

Got it? OK. That is what you use for the password.

    Your are Welcome  ;D

Extracted from this site.   Note that even a blank password (just hitting Enter) will be flagged as invalid.

    Recovery Console Password

On many XP installations you can't start the Recovery Console because it won't recognize your password. This registry edit causes the Recovery Console not to ask for a password. This works for both XP Home and XP Professional.

    Start | Run | Regedit
    Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Setup\RecoveryConsole
Set the DWORD SecurityLevel value to 1
    Exit Registry and Reboot

    Good luck

Ok, well so much for going it that direction. Guess I'll try a re-install

      Thanks

The choice is yours of course, personally I apply the regedit.

Remember that if you are re-installing the same system version the problem with accessing Recovery Console may exist after the re-install.   You might want to consider trying to access Recovery Console after the re-install and if the password stonewall still appears, apply the regedit.

Whatever you decide - good luck.

If it is his system, he can destroy the password.
But may not work if some data has been put in private directories.

We are told here not to help people with password problems. But if you know how to Google, there is some free stuff and some not free stuff out there to help people who believe they that have a reason to bypass the security.
