    Windows XP Service Pack 2
    « on: February 12, 2009, 08:01:33 PM »
I was wondering if downloading Service Pack 2 is free online? I have been having problems with my Internet Explorer, and I need to upgrade but it says I need to download that to be able to upgrade. Thanks.

Just click Start then All Programs and select Windows Update.

That's the best way to get all of the updated service pack files.

When I go to download the service pack it says, the expected program was not found on this computer. I'm not sure what this means.

Yeah and it said I'm missing files on my system, so I selected to install them and nothing was installed.

The message from when I try to install the service pack, or when I run the Windows Update?

Both, but where did you get SP2 from?

"The expected version of the product was not found on your system"-when I try to upgrade to SP3

To install SP3, you have to have at least SP1 installed.
You may start with SP2 actually, since it gives you firewall protection.

              Download Dial-A-Fix (DAF):
              http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix#Mirrors.2Fdownload_locations.2C_and_articles

Have XP CD available in case DAF needs a file. Likely not!

Check all boxes on the screen (clear any restrictions if it shows any)
              Then click GO!

When the entire page is finished click the HammerHead at bottom to go to the second DAF page.

Here, one at a time, do the below:

              Reinstall BITS
              Reinstall Windows Firewall
              Repair Permissions
              Reset networking

Watch for any File not found or other errors and make note as this may lead to the fix!

              Restart computer.

It makes me terminate the program after this message comes up:

OK. So we have some more issues here.
Let's go back. What's the computer story? What's wrong with it to start with?

Well I had a rootkit, got that fixed but I had to reinstall Windows XP...once I did that I started having problems with Internet explorer as it would shut down at random times.

Yes it was the reinstallation XP CD...the only thing I thought might be a problem is that it was a different version of the original XP that I had on this computer...I originally had normal XP, and I used the Home Edition of XP because I couldn't find the original one that I had before.

Normal XP? There is Home Edition and Professional edition- which one is on the PC?

Computer's and CD's Windows versions must match.

You need to borrow an XP Pro CD and start over or you will continue to have issues...
XP Home cannot repair XP Pro and vice versa...
