What's best for a new Laptop user?
    « on: February 17, 2009, 07:53:10 PM »
I'm thinking of getting a Laptop, paying with my own money, and maybe, probably up to 400-450 dollars. i know it isn't much, but i'm a kid.

Do you think Windows or Vista?

    BR

EDIT: If Vista, Premium or Basic?

Not sure where you'd get a laptop with XP anyhow... and not many laptops with premium are in your price range- so you're kind of stuck going with Basic.

I'm looking thoroughly in on the "Compaq - Presario Laptop with AMD Athlon™ X2 QL-62 Dual-Core Processor " laptop, the one I've been looking at. It says 6.5lbs. Is that...a good weight?? I have 2 three pound weights, and I put them on one hand, and it's pretty light.

Take a look at the buyer reviews posted on Best Buy's website.  Plenty of happy users there.

I have a Compaq Presario notebook but not the model you're looking at.  Bought mine back in July 2007.  Been pleased with it except that the CMOS battery (small battery on the motherboard to provide power to retain BIOS settings and time) apparently is weak.  The evidence of this is that, if I let the computer sit turned off a day or so with the main battery out of it and then I start it, the time has to be reset because it's lost time (amounting to hours, not minutes).

So, I suggest, if you buy it, use it part of the time with the main battery removed, meaning run it directly off the AC adapter power cord, to see whether this causes any abnomalities to appear when left off overnight or longer and then restarted.  You want to catch any problems while it's under warranty, if possible, so that you can get the problem resolved under warranty.

              And, it says it comes with;

That includes like...The Charger, and all of the things like that, too?

EDIT: This computer i'm using right now is a COMPAQ, too.

I believe that's very close to what mine weighs.  I don't move mine around a lot, so the weight is not an issue for me.  I suppose that if I did carry it around a lot, then I'd be more concerned about the weight.  But, I believe that weight is fairly typical for many laptops, and I think you may need to spend more to get one of the lighter weight models on the market.

I bought mine at Staples.  It's over 1 1/2 years old now and I don't believe it's still being sold by any of the popular retailers such as Staples, OfficeMax, Best Buy, etc.  You can see it here:
http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/hp-compaq-presario-f572us/4505-3121_7-32473965.html  A few months ago, I increased the RAM to 2GB.

So was the first one JJ mentioned (And you were looking at).

But I'm not going to go back and edit my earlier posts just to appear right later on in the thread.

I think that's totally fair considering it's messy carrying tomatoes around all the time...

I didn't post any review, because, it's just an average laptop.
First, I saw it, I was like....it's pretty good price for these specs, so I bought it.
                    So far, flawless....almost.
It must be something wrong with HP program for creating recovery disks.
It didn't work in my desktop, it didn't work with the laptop.
In both cases, I had call HP, and they sent me free recovery DVDs.
