    Weird computer booting issue
    « on: February 21, 2009, 07:19:56 PM »
    Hey all,

My homemade computer, which has been a workhorse for almost 4 years now (yea, yea) is giving me a weird issue. It's turning on and running, power seems fine, but as it boots the monitor does not engage, and as far as I can tell, its not simply a monitor issue as I've tried logging in "blind" and nothing happens.

I just left it going for about 5 minutes and this time it simply shut off on it's own, which it has done before. Could this be a heat issue? Thanks!

      Need more infor:

      brand of PC
      memory
      OS being used

Usually when something like this it is a heat problem. Make sure all fans r running, the CPU cooling sys is working.

What are you hearing for beeps at startup?......Bad RAM, cooling issues, power supply or MB are all possible culprits. If beep code is normal a 4 year old power supply is a good place to start, especially if a bargain supply was used.

Power supply was replaced about 18 months ago, got a decent one. Antec 380W.

Computer is running windows XP, 2 sticks of Ultra DDR 512mb, AMD 3200+ CPU with a LAN Party motherboard (can't remember model offhand). This computer has had some heat issues too.

Also, while its running, the USB mouse is getting power and the CD drive is responsive. Keyboard is not (its a PS/2). No beeps when starting up. I have this semi defective CD drive that I tried disconnecting, and that registered 1 long beep but only once after I removed it.

If you are getting nothing on the monitor at all, at boot up, it sounds like your Graphics Card may have died ..... do you know if you have a seperate Card or on board graphics ?

I don't think it's just a video card issue; I tried a USB keyboard and that got no response at all from the computer and numlock, etc would not work either. I clean it out thoroughly and removed a *censored* ton of dust, but I think it was too little too late.

              Did you try another monitor?
