Super slow laptop. Telling me I need Sys Admin. Virus?
    « on: February 24, 2009, 11:40:20 AM »
My laptop was purchased last month.  It has since become increasingly slower.  When I tried to remove a program from the add/remove list (utorrent) it said that the program may have already been uninstalled (it was, 2 weeks ago) and asked if I wanted to remove the icon.  I chose yes and it said,

"You do not have sufficient access to remove utorrent from the add or remove programs list.  please contact system administrator."

Also, when I tried to install SUPERAntispyware it gave the following message:  Error 1401.  Could not create key:\software\SUPERAntispyware.com\SUPERAntispyware.  verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel."

What's up with that?  As the owner of the computer aren't I system admin and can't I decide what comes off or goes on my computer.  Also, I get tremendous slowdown not just in windows but also on-line.

I am on my last nerve and about to uninstall everything and use my recovery disk.  Please help so I don't have to.

(AVG Free and Ad-Aware find nothing wrong on my comp and I ran CCleaner)

Are you able to run HijacThis? You can download it here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download5554.html

Download Malwarebytes and see if it can run. http://majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html

      <snip>

These programs will generate logs so be sure to post them back here for the Techs to look at.

Please do not instruct users to run ComboFix unless you are trained to use it.

Then you need to go through the proper channels and send me a PM. We would love to have you help but we it's the same with everyone. You need to clear it with us before using tools such as ComboFix.

Send me a PM if interested.

Posting advice without having the title "Malware Removal Specialist" under your user name in the Computer Viruses and Spyware forum will get your post edited or deleted as the wrong advice is too risky for the users we are trying to help.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:  Can't install it.  I get the following message: "Error creating resistry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Malwarebytes' AntiMalware"

And now I am confused about whether I should run ComboFix.  I downloaded it and started to run it but hit control-alt-delete and ended program when I realized I had the other replies.  I'm so confused.  To run or not to run?

Running ComboFix with the problems you are having now is very risky. You could easily reboot to no working OS.

You need to remove all cracks before I can continue helping. This is likely the source of you problems anyway.

          Download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer

Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on OTMoveIt3.exe and choose Run As Administrator.

          * Save it to your Desktop.
          * Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
          * Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy)

          Code: [Select]
          :Processes
          explorer.exe

          :files
          C:\DOCUME~1\Danielle\LOCALS~1\Temp\RarSFX1\Launch WinRAR.exe
          E:\File Compressers and Expanders\WinRAR 3.8.0.1 Unplugged Regged and Cracked\WinRAR 3.8.0.1 Patched Unplugged.exe

          :Commands
          [purity]
          [emptytemp]
          [start explorer]

          * Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
          * Click the red Moveit! button.
          * Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
          Close OTMoveIt3

Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot your computer in order to finish the move process.

Important: This task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

          * Click Start > Run and type notepad.exe and click OK to bring up Windows Notepad.
          * Copy and then paste the following text into Notepad.

          secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose

          * Save this Notepad file as Reset.cmd to your desktop. Be sure the Save as type is set to all files.
          * Once you have save it properly, double-click the Reset.cmd file to run the script.
** Note: This script file may take a long time to run. Additionally, you have to run this script as an administrator.
          * Now reboot your computer! You must do this before the above will take effect.

          ----------

Now try to install and run MalwareBytes again please. Let me know what happens. Post the log if it runs.

Is there anyway, besides stopping downloading completely, that I can better protect my computer in the future?  To be honest, I thought that, since I wasn't downloading Porn or things along that line, I would be relatively safe from Malware.  Naive, I know and it seems like I'm wrong.

Downloading cracks/torrents as a flip of the coin if you will get infected or not. See here what is out there right now. http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,77096.0.html

              1. Double click OTMoveIt3.exe to launch it.
Vista users right click and choose Run As Administrator
              2. Click on the CleanUp! button.
              3. OTMoveIt2 will download a list from the Internet, if your firewall or other defensive programs alerts you, allow it access.
              4. Click YES at the next prompt (list downloaded, Do you want to begin cleanup process?)
              5. Once complete exit out of OTMoveIt3

              ----------

Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one
Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will enable your computer to roll-back to a clean working state if needed.
              • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click System Restore
              • Choose the radio button marked Create a Restore Point on the first screen then click Next Give the Restore Point a name then click Create.
              • The new restore point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
              • Next go to Start > Run and type Cleanmgr
              • Click OK
              • Click the More Options Tab.
              • Click Clean Up in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created clean one.
You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide or Windows Vista System Restore Guide
              .
              ----------

Use the Secunia Software Inspector to check for out of date software.
              • Click Start Now
              • Check the box next to Enable thorough system inspection.
              • Click Start
              • Allow the scan to finish and scroll down to see if any updates are needed.
              • Update anything listed.
              .
              ----------

Go to Microsoft Windows Update and get all critical updates.

              ----------

Here are some great FREE tools to help you keep from getting infected again. These tools use little or no resources so won't slow down your PC.

I suggest using WOT - Web of Trust. WOT is a free Internet security addon for your browser. It will keep you safe from online scams, identity theft, spyware, spam, viruses and unreliable shopping sites. WOT warns you before you interact with a risky website. It's easy and it's free.

SpywareBlaster - Secure your Internet Explorer to make it harder for ActiveX programs to run on your computer. Also stop certain cookies from being added to your computer when running Mozilla based browsers like Firefox.
              * Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware
              * If you don't know what ActiveX controls are, see here

TY!  For the help with the problems as well as the advice on how to not reinfect my computer.  I will share this forum topic with my boyfriend for our future reference as he has been known to download torrents as well.  I don't want his brand new desktop and laptop to end up with a problem too.
