    recognizing new ram
    « on: March 05, 2009, 03:38:53 PM »
I recently bought a new 1.0G ram stick to add to my current 1.0G ram, however my computer is not recognizing the additional memory.  The stick is in properly and is compatible with my computer.  Is there a step that I'm missing?

the first stick may be faster than the second, and is forcing the BIOS to run at a higher speed, and ignoring the second stick, try swapping them.

It won't ignore the 2nd stick...it will just run at the slower speed...
Where is the RAM being reported ? ?

I came across a board at school that would refuse to run with the faster stick first...

Switched the sticks and made sure the bios was current.  It's still only showing the 1G memory when I look at the computer properties.

Ok, I did that and I'm able to see the stick.  Now what do I do with that information?

          Nothing.
Put it in the memory banks and be glad your system is recognising all your RAM...no matter what Windows says.

The final, all out check would be to see how much the BIOS is recognizing, normally on the first page of the BIOS when you enter it.

Mine, however, if under system Info, so look around.

Okay, this hardware stuff is pretty unfamiliar to me.  I'm guessing that you mean to look under BIOS in SIW, however, I don't see any memory information in there.  When I look under mother board memory summary, it says maximum capacity is 1024 MB with 2 slots, the computer came with 1G of ram already installed.  If I look under system summary, it says that the virtual memory is 2314MB total, 1415MB free.....not sure if that's related to my issue or not.  The whole reason we added more RAM was because we have two children and have a lot on our computer and were hoping to speed it up a bit in the regular daily stuff.

if thats the max you can use then your going over it as such if you had two 512 that = 1 gb but you can't apperantly have 2 gb with this machine.

No I mean in your actual BIOS.
It may look something like this:

See where it says Total Memory?

Anyway, if the maximum is 1GB...then you cannot go about 1GB of RAM.
1GB of RAM is a very small address range though...

I see what it's supposed to look like, just don't know how to get to it aside from SIW

Ah ok I see silly me.

During the initial boot, when the bios comes up to check hardware, (you may see a boot screen of some sort/logo)

It will normally state somewhere on the screen to push a key to enter BIOS, this is usually the delete key. it can also be F1, F12, F2, F10, or any other Key the makers selected.

BIOS says cache RAM 1024 KB

on the main page it says

                  installed memory 1024 MB/PC2-4200
memory bank 1 1024 MB DDR2 SDRAM (this is the new stick)
                  memory bank 2 not installed

If that was with both sticks in, then yes I am afraid the max you can have is 1GB
