    Computer doesnt recognize H.D?
    « on: March 09, 2009, 09:34:11 AM »
Hi, I just joined the forum, and feel I can contribute as much as I ask.
This may be a low tech question, but I'm looking for a/few perspectives.
I recently had a power outage, since then my computer will not boot correctly.
I am running XP on it right now, the computer is a Dell XPS gaming tower, about 5 years old.
When I turn it on, it usually gets as far, as the recovery mode,ie last known good config, safe mode, etc.
If I select any of them, I get blue screened. Just for the *censored* of it I tried a different sata port. When I do this, it prompts me for setup, ie Raid Vol 1. not defined. Ctrl F1 for config, F2 for setup.
I already checked the H.D. on a SATA H.D. dock and the data on the H.D. seems all intact.

Sorry for the length explanation, I just wanted to try and be thorough.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

hi im terry, this problem could be tricky. try loading bios setup, or change your hardware one at a time or reinstall them. It could be your graphics card or your config file corrupted. have you tried to reinstall windows factory settings. Good luck

What is the "exact" error message and/or numbers, if any, on the blue screen?

Thanks, I may have to, although it's unlikely that it's something like a graphics card.

            0x0000007b, (0xf79f8524, 0xc00000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
            That's what I'm getting.

Thanks everyone, I figured out what the problem is.
Somehow during the power surge, it must have completely messed up the bios settings.
Switching SATA ports is never a good idea in this type of situation, that is why I was getting the error codes on the BSOD as I posted earlier, basically an inaccessible boot device.
On the original port I was just prompted to go to setup, which I did many times, but no drive appeared anywhere, just diskette, and cd/dvd as primary and secondary. I realized that RAID was turned on, which incidentally limits many other options from appearing. When I turned raid off, then I was able to get to an H.D. screen which allowed me to switch from none to unknown. After that, all was good. This was all from a power outage, I did not change anything software wise or hardware on the computer. It sounds like any easy fix, and it was, but troubleshooting not so easy.

Nice job. :)  When the "inaccessible boot device" message appears on a Blue Screen of Death, you're allowed to mention it (if it's present). ::)

I absolutely would've mentioned it, it however did not say that. I researched it after the fact, and there were still a few other stop errors also.
                    Thank you.

My bad.  Thanks for getting back to us with the resolution.  I'm going to store that one away in my memory banks.
