    Computer won't boot operating system
    « on: March 15, 2009, 12:12:35 PM »
I have an e-machines computer. After it is turned on it goes thru the normal boot up sequence, but when it gets to the windows xp logo. The display goes out and says it doesn't have a signal. I have tried a different monitor, cable and video card. Still doesn't work. Tried unplugging DVD/CD drive and booty whithout it. Nothing seems to work. Also does the same thing in safe mode.

Does the computer seem to shut down at that point?

Is the video on board (built into the motherboard) or is it from an installed video card?

    Try this:

Just after the initial boot-up disappears (BIOS) tap F8 repeatedly to bring up the Windows Startup Menu, and select Enable VGA Mode.

Boot with that and see what happens.

My computer does have an on board video. I have been using a PNY GeForce video card. I removed the video card and changed the bios setting back to on board video. Still have the same results.
The computer is still powered up, but the indicator light on the front is amber instead of green.
Couldn't find a VGA setting only the on board video or the video memory amount.

The computer had been working fine up to this point with the video card. Walked a way for a few hours and when  i came back the display said i didn't have a signal and the light on the front was amber.

make sure the heatsink was tight, and the processor not overheated. When was the last time you apply a thermal paste?

These happened to 1of my pc, so probably the same as you.

I already pulled the heatsink off processor and the video card and applied new paste. That didn't work ether.

eMachine = Bestec power supply = you need new power supply

I put in new power supply when I put in the video card earlier before this problem. I'm at a loss!

What was the exact reason for replacing power supply? Those Bestecs are known not for problems only, but also for damaging motherboards.

I was told to replace it when i put in the new video card. They said my old power supply wouldn't be able to handle the addition of the new video card. Thats why i replaced the power supply.

Did you try to remove video card, and go back to on-board video?

That's what I was thinking, too, but it looks like that was already attempted.
