XP Startup Issue, or lack of.....
« on: March 16, 2009, 08:35:12 AM »
Hi Folks,

Would really appreciate any advise you can give on this:

Running XP on a Vaio, it froze when installing service pack 3. Since then, the laptop will not complete start up.

The first screen displays the Window XP icon on a black background, with the blue loading icon.

The next screen displays the Window XP icon, blue background and mouse icon appears. The touchpad has control of the cursor, but start up does not continue.

CTR+ALT+DEL has no affect.

Running safe mode, control line fill the page, and then the blue background and mouse icon appears, although in a reduced window. Again, the touchpad has control of the cursor, but start up does not continue.

Running last know good configuration, ending up with the Window XP icon, blue background and mouse icon appears. The touchpad has control of the cursor, but start up does not continue.

The laptop has apparently got the boot information so it did not come with any boot CD’s.

So at the moment, the laptop is just an expensive paperweight!

Thanks for reading.

1. If you have Windows CD, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp

2. If you don't have Windows CD...
Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp, starting below this picture on page 1:
