hello all, i have a serious driver issue , i have just paid $180 to get windows xp home installed i have been instucted to get driver detective to begin to try and resolve a screen issue it seems i have 10 drivers that need updating  :'( my machine is currently consisting of these stats.. 2002 win xp home,5.1.2600. 512mb ram, intel celeron 2.00ghz .  so can any tell me if i have an option not to pay $30 to have driver detective repair these drivers. as current hard times are causing financial difficulties. i thought that when i got the home edition installed all would be (sweet) but it appears not..the problems are..intel (r) usb universal host controller, ess1969 pci audio drive, lucent win modem, intel  (r) 8280 ultra ata storage controller-24cb- intel sm bus controller, intel pci controller, intel processor(2)  any tips/help i would be grateful thanks. i have also noticed that most free driver update web sites are not free for updating..

You should be able to go to the computer manufacturers web site and run their driver utility for your specific computer.

Wow! I would have charged half that and installed drivers and updates and thrown in some cool software to play with.

Can you tell us your computer's brand and model?
Can you post a screen shot of device manager?

Driver Detective will nearly ALWAYS tell you that you have drivers that need to be updated. As already suggested, you can usually get your drivers from either the PC website if you have a manufactured PC or from the the motherboard/hardware websites.
Sometimes, with older PC's it may take a bit of searching but most all drivers can be found and are free.
Along with the suggestions JJ 3000 made, you might want to add your motherboard ID, too.
The one unchangeable certainty is that nothing is certain or unchangeable.

Because of a bad experience with 3 suppliers of the so-called driver update software available in the NET, the purpose of this post is to clarify the position of various suppliers of such software, the adequacy of their solutions to your problem and whether or not they should be allowed to run their Business. It will be a long story…

Because many manufacturers of printers, External speakers, External USB disk drivers, cameras, Glycemia monitor recorder and other gadgets, it was impossible to Microsoft to stamp all those devices with a clean bill of ineffaceable to the various versions Of Microsoft wide array of Operating Systems, which by the way  differ only in cosmetics and memory consumption…

So, various companies, attempted to fill in this Gap. Amongst them Driver Detective and Driver Agent are, probably, the most currently used.

They all share a common characteristic and that is : REPORT YOUR DRIVER AS BAD, even if you are experiencing no problem at all in your everyday computing.

In this respect they are like fashion Gurus in the French garment business. If is not Chanel, Paco Rabane, YSL or Hermes you are not up to date…

This is a ridiculous approach to solving technical problems. Their ultimate goal is to create a doubt in your mind and make you download drivers that work worse thn what you had before….

Since there is no European company in this area, my advice is: If you are in Europe, Do not purchase any these things. Consider, instead to save your money to buy a new PC, when you can afford it.

However, I would be unfair, if I placed all those suppliers in the same level, and that regards support, acceptance of dialogue, and obtain user satisfaction. Even if they do not solve your problem, which anyway they cannot, because they do not and obviously cannot write USB drivers.

In that order I would rate :

1-   DriverCure from ParetoLogic in Canada’s British Columbia – Polite, Intelligent, hardworking and Timely.
2-   Driver Detective – probably the best software to identify your driver’s as bad for US based computers. Useless for European models. Support is Laconic
3-   Driver Agent – Those are uneducated bastards as far as support goes and I have emails to prove it. Technically they take the approach : If there is a new driver from someone, lets make the idiots download it. They downloaded a 5.1 driver when my USB Speakers and audio Realtek are just stereo. The support is arrogantly nasty. I can prove it . Also they rob you because their subscription is automatically renewed. You have no option but to cancel the renewal, but that only applies to the next period. It is the only Software company that follows the procedures of an “Escort Agency”
