laptop can't connect to any networks
    « on: March 26, 2009, 11:28:50 PM »
hi, i noticed today that when i turned my computer on it wouldn't connect to my to the internet through wireless, it was constantly "acquiring network address",so i tried plugging it into my router and it still won't connect.  have no idea how to fix, so can you please help? not sure what information i need to provide so i just put in the basics, but please ask for any that will help solve my problem.

I am running windows xp pro sp2, i don't get any error message, i have a  Compaq Presario V6126TU Notebook PC with 504mb of RAM and an Intel Celeron CPU @ 1.60GHz. my network adapters are a Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN and a Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection. I tried re-installing drivers for both but it did nothing. Before today everything worked perfectly. I haven't recently changed anything on my computer.

Please help me, i will be very grateful!

Do you think the Laptop has a virus? If not, here is what I would do:
Remove or disable the wireless device.
Make sure the Ethernet connection is good.
Run the Network Wizard again.  Reboot.
Look in Network Places to see if you can find your work group.
Try to plug and unplug the cable. Sometimes that helps.
Repair the connection. (That is an option when you right clickj on the connection in Network Connections.)

If all else finals, Install Network Magic. There is a free trail from Crisco. If that does not work. you may have real hardware p[problems.

        Maybe it is broken.
But kyou could try run cmd.
        At DOS prompt do:
        ipconfig
        and see what you get
         and try
        ipconfig /renew
Here is what you might expect to see:
        Code: [Select]
        Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
        (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.
        C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>ipconfig /renew
        Windows IP Configuration
        Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:
                Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . : gateway.2wire.net
                IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.75
                Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
                Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.254
        C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>
Mine is wireless, so there is not much to see. But notice the UP address.
Expect something like 192.168.X.XX more or less, depending the router.

I think that you are going to find a solution only if you know the IP address that your ISP provided to you.
So the information needed here are :
          IP address
          subnet mask
          default gateway.
You can get those detail from your ISP. Contact them.
After you get the detail go to My network Places icon on the desktop and click on View network connections, on the local area connection right click and chose properties, double click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and here you mast give IP addresses.
          Cheers.

as for wireless connection, this usually happen when password is changed on the router, or network authentication (WPA, WPA/PSK,etc) changed. try re-setting the wireless connection.

and if you plug a network cable directly into the router, everything works ok right?

i dont know how to change the wpa key on my router, it is a thomson TG585v7. i think my main problem is that i cant renew my ip:

                  C:\Documents and Settings\XP User>ipconfig /renew

                  Windows IP Configuration

An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Network Connection 2 : unabl
e to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.

my ip at the moment is 0.0.0.0
the subnet mask is also 0.0.0.0

if i try to connect to the network by setting the ip, subnet mask, and default gateway to the same as the local area connection, my computer says it is connected but i still can not use the internet

possibly your router isn't assigning a dhcp address to your wireless device
