I thought the Optiplex GX260 only has an IDE (PATA) controller.

I don't have a clue whats wrong with this system. It was working a few days ago until I attempted to reinstall windows. After it deleted the partition and formatted the hard drive, it tells me there's no hard drive connected when there is. After doing allot of searching on the Internet I found that I need some sort of driver for windows to detect the Maxtor DiamondMax 9 hard drive. I have been reading the FAQ on the maxtor website which says I need a driver for the Serial ATA on the motherboard for the windows installation to recognise the hard drive. I don't have a clue what driver is actually needed for the windows installation to detect the hard drive.

      Anyone got any ideas?

      Thanks :)

The correct Driver will be at Dell's site...
Travel there and enter your service tag# from the machine and it will list all your drivers.

Maxtor DiamondMax 9 is an IDE drive, not a SATA. Like I said, the Optiplex 260 only takes IDE drives. Have you heard any clicking sounds coming from this drive? You have not said what size it is, or how old. The first DiamondMax 9 came out quite a long time ago, it could be dead of old age. The Plus 9s are more recent. Installing Windows followed by being told that there is no hard drive connected when you know there is can be a sign that the drive has died.

Thanks for your suggestion but I tried that but the problem is that this computer is refurnished and does not have the hard drive which dell originally installed. The only IDE & EIDE Controllers they have is for a Hitachi Deskstar 180GXP Family (20,30,40,60,80,120GB) Hard Drives. The hard drive in this computer is a Maxtor.

Hard Drive Model: Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8
        Capacity: 4 Gb

The hard drive is not making any unusual sounds. Its just making the usual sounds of it powering up and spinning. I also noticed that under Primary Drive in BIOS, when there is a disk in the disk drive it says UNKNOWN but when there's no CD in the disk drive it says Maxtor N40P.

Don't know what you mean. Any IDE drive will connect to an IDE controller, the brand does not matter.

A Plus 8 4 GB? This drive must be very very old. I expect it is dead. 4 GB? Are you sure? Minimum to install XP is 2 GB so you would not be able to do much.

A Plus 8 40 GB drive is old. HDDs don't last for ever.

Ok, the hard drive may be dead. I have a old system which is no longer used, the hard drive still works on this old system, do you think it would work if I put it into the Optiplex?

It is certainly worth a try.
