    Services reset themselves
    « on: March 29, 2009, 08:51:28 AM »
    I didn't find this question anywhere else. I have Windows XP Home w/ Pk 2.  I haven't got to 3, because I'm dealing with this.  I have my original discs, but Gateway reset my confirmation ID, since Mircosoft reset the Id when the computer was serviced. I have a Gateway EV700 with 512 Ram. Pent 4 processor & ASRock P4VM 890 motherboard.

    I've reloaded everything, because I couldn't find the default settings for services for XP Home, my computer was bogged down, and regcure made things worse??? My cd doesn't recognized a disc half the time nor does it want to record  now my sound doesn't work.  Having no sound is a new thing. It worked when I reloaded now I only have computer noise coming through.  I've checked all with PC Doctor and all was fine, but it stated I had audio disc in when I didn't.

    I got the default settings back when I reloaded on the 17th and reset them how I wanted them, but at some point after loading PK2 or McAfee my services changed. I can't change them and make them stay.

    I've attempted several times. They don't even go back to their default settings. It's causing my computer to run more than what's needed and causing my computer to freeze, stall, have issues...etc., because there's so many things running (STARTED).  I've tried everything. I even disabled startup protection and service guard in McAfee to see if that was causing it, but when I reset them and logged back on ALL was back to the way they were before I changed them once again, so I've enabled protection. I don't need all of these running (STARTED), but I don't want them disabled either.

    Is there another way to do this beside going into services and start up in msconfig?

      Try ;

      Start>Run>services.msc

      It's a more friendly and descriptive screen..

      I'd also suggest doing the malware scans, just to cover all bases....seems to be more happening here than just a services issue.
