I have a brand new laptop and the Norton expired today. Should I just renew it or there a better program out there? I know about Conficker so I know I need to do something now.

    Thanks!

You will find that many here will recommend AVG, Avast, or Avira antivirus programs.  They all have free versions available which are just as good -- most would argue, better -- than Norton.

Just be sure your Windows Firewall is up and running......it will provide you with some protection until you have a new AV program up and running.......I personally avoid Norton (provided free from my ISP)....it just doesn't do the job and it's burned me so many times I can't count.......Remember you may need a spyware (real time) program as well since a lot of the AV programs don't do spyware.

Avg proviveds a spyware scanner in its intall, dont care since you can do it seperatly know with out doing an on-line scan also, avast will do a boot scan once installed it will restart and scan your drive.

avg and AVAST or AVIRA are fine choices, all three update at least once a day.

I am now using latest version of AVG which does just fine, some people say AVAST is better but for me, as long as it updates at least once a day then I'm fine with it.

My friend bought a laptop a while ago and norton expired about a month ago, so he got BitDefender and he says it's really good.

I personally use CA Anti-Virus package (comes with spyware, firewall, parental controls and more)

                Good Grief!   ::)

Nobody has anything good to say about Norton?
                What does the subscription cost?
What else do you get? Extra utilities?
Has the Norton ever failed to protect you?
Has Norton done anything to annoy you?

ALL of the current AV programs fall short of full protection. There many know things that none of them can prevent. To date, these other ugly things have not yet been released. They are nameless, but not powerless. They are just waiting for more people to get on the AV wagon and for just a few companies to offer effective AV. Then the Virus Lords will deploy new machinations. As long as no police action is taken against these criminals, the cycle will just go on and on.

What I am trying to say is there is good reason to have a number of firms working on new AV solutions. It may well be that Norton will be the first to come up with protection that others miss. We just do not know. Past performance is not a guarantee of future protection.

Overall, Norton has been ranked as a third place runner. Evaluate your experience with Norton and make a choice. Norton still may be your best choice.
Just renew it and avoid the pain of uninstall one, install another, get the update, do a full scan. All that stuff.

Norton has improved, over the years.  Has it ever failed to protect me?  Not that I'm aware.  It has, however, in the past, bogged down my system.  I think their subscription price is a bit high, but that's just me.  I can see why the original poster would stay with Norton.

Comodo is good, but more for the tech savey kind of people. It has a HIPs based engine, therefore instead of signature it bases it's detection on behaviour. It also has signature based scanning as well.

Norton is supplied free to me by my ISP (Rogers) and I must honestly say it is the most useless AV program I have ever used. It uses incredible memory resources and it's scans are extremely slow. The Antispyware feature always catches one (1) tracking cookie every scan....That's it.......I can relate to getting a nasty virus when I downloaded IE8......I got whacked by a drive by hijacker trojan that allowed me to get on the net for three minutes at a time and would then reboot. I managed to download Stopzilla in three minutes and have used it since. Great program.....Norton?....It wasn't aware of the problem.
