    Reformatting an hp laptop
    « on: April 03, 2009, 11:16:31 AM »
Hope this is the right place to post. How can i go about doing this without the CD? the laptop is an hp pavillion dv 1000 and it has a partioned disk. It's my girlfriend's but she seems to have lost the cd that came with it. Please be detailed as i have no experience formatting a computer before. Thanx in advance.

    Press F10 at HP logo.
Be warned, all your data will be lost.

After using F10 option, the computer will be returned to is original state, like being straight from the store.

oh ok, but this might not be able to work. this work off of the partioned disk right? the problem is it had the the virut with infected all that stuff, i've managed to clear the virut off but some system files are corrupted so i think that may be corrupted as well. I will try it but i just want to know what to do in the event that those files weren't infected

Your computer should have recovery partition, unless someone played with it.
If you don't care about your data, you won't break anything by trying.

I'm sorry didn't explain properly. i had the win32/virut which had infected the filled of the partitioned disk, so this is why i'm not sure it might not work. i'm gonna back up the necessary files before i do this.

If you back up, make sure, after reinstall, you scan every single file with AV program.

Make sure, you re-scan them later, too.

so just as i had anticipated, when i open the hp recovery console it tells me that NTRDL is missing. So now back to my first question, is there a way to do it without the cd?
