Can't open Internet Properties or attach files to my e-mail
    « on: April 09, 2009, 01:17:37 PM »
The other day I downloaded Internet Explorer 8 to my computer.  After I did whenever I tried to open Internet Explorer I was unable to.  The window appeared and then disappeared from the screen just as quickly.  So I did a restore to go back to before the installation.  This solved the problem of not being able to open the internet at all.  Now, however, I cannot open Internet Properties on IE.  Also, when I tried to attach a file to an email message, nothing happened.  I tried to fix that problem and that is when I discovered that I could not open Internet Properties from IE.

I am working on a Fujitsu laptop with Windows XP.  My email is through MSN.

    Any suggestions?  Thanks

Give this a try since you've just installed the browser.

Go to Tools>Internet Options>Advanced Tab>Reset Internet Explorer settings.....hopefully this resets IE to default.

        Hi,

Thanks for posting this suggestion.  I haven't been online in a few days.

I cannot perform the function you suggested because Internet Properties does not open.

I tried to download Internet Explorer again but it won't allow that either.  No error message, just nothing happens.  I am at my wit's end.

Also, I am unable to delete SPAM messages from my Yahoo accounts.

Thanks again, if you have any more suggestions, I would be very grateful.

Brenda, you possibly have a malware/virus issue. To eliminate this as a cause go to http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,46313.0.html and follow the guidelines. Post the logs and a specialist will take a boo at them and see if there's a bug.

I also have had issues with the IE8 download.......a browser hijacker, that crippled my PC.

OK, I went to the help site and tried to follow the instructions (not difficult).  I couldn't download any of the free anti spyware programs listed.  NOTHING happened, the screen just sat there.  To me, it looked like I was sent away from the site, but maybe I am wrong about that.  I stopped at this step.  Any suggestions?

              Thanks

IE 8 is a beta program, so there are going to be problems. That's the whole point of a beta - so people can report the errors and problems to the vendor before the full non-beta version comes out.

                  Hi Brenda,

If you do start > run >, when the box comes up type "inetcpl.cpl".  This should bring up your internet explorer internet options box.  If you go to the advanced tab, as mentioned earlier by Karnac, and down the bottom it will let you reset the defaults of IE there.

If you want to try a rollback from IE8 to IE7 try downloading this from the link below.  You can do this by start > run > when the box opens up copy the link below in to the box and it should force the browser to open up the webpage.

Let us know how you get on please, thanks!

Thanks for the post, Metal Messiah, but when I type in that command, nothing happens, just like all of the other nothings I have been getting.

                    I appreciate it.

                      Hi Brenda,

                      No probs :)

If IE8 stays open long enough, try downloading Firefox, if you don't have it already.  It's a really good browser.  Try doing an uninstall of IE8 then use the link I gave you to download IE7 and reinstall that, just so you have a version of IE.

I'd maybe stay away from IE8 just now if you just want to surf the net.  As Kpac said in an earlier post, this is just a beta version.  It's really for people wanting to test out the new browser and report back to the vendor.  So this might just be a bug that has a fix, but it's a fix that's in the pipeline.  I know of a few people that have had problems with IE8 after downloading.  Some of them on here.

You can get Firefox at the link below.  Hope you get okay with this.

                        Hi, again,

Well, here's the thing.  Since I did a restore on my computer, I cannot find Internet Explorer to uninstall.  Bizarre?  When I had IE8 installed, the internet screen only stayed visible for a second.

                        Thanks

                          Hi there,

Could answer the questions below for me please Brenda.

You done a system restore, so what browser are you using just now and what version (you can click on help on the top menu then about to find this out) ?

When you say you couldn't find IE to uninstall, do you mean when you go in to the control panel, then add or remove programs that IE8 is not there or there is no internet explorer version in there at all?

                          Many thanks,
                          MM

You cannot uninstall IE from Windows, you can just remove shortcuts to it.

First, manually download the IE7 setup file on another computer if you have to, and then transfer it with a memory stick or CD.
                          Download Link

Next, go to the computer with the problem, and go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components (on left tab), and select Internet Explorer. Good through the steps and remove it.

Finally, double click on the IE7 setup file to install Internet Explorer 7.

                              Hello Everyone,

Just want to thank everybody who has posted to help me with this problem.  Unfortunately, things keep getting more complicated.

So, at the suggestion of a friend I did another system restore to an even earlier date than the first one.  After I did this and I clicked the big E the screen came up for just a second again.  So this friend suggested I use Safari because he likes it.  My computer wouldn't let me download it from the site so he copied it and put it on my computer.  I could get onto the internet but now I cannot open any messages in my MSN email.  I will try all of your new suggestions and let's see what happens.  I'll be back.  Thanks again, everyone.  This is a great experience.

To answer Metal Messiah, I could not find IE in the install/uninstall programs but it is on my computer.

So, I tried to remove IE from the Add/Remove (I found it) and it wouldn't let me remove it.  So I downloaded IE7 again and still, when I click to open it a screen pops up then disappears immediately.

                                  Hello Everyone,

I have been away housesitting and not using my computer.  What a relief.  So I am back and it is running slowly.  I think I need to delete the temporary internet files but nowhere can I find the box I used to run this option from.  Also, on my control panel I thought I used to see an icon for internet options --- it's gone.  I still can't use IE7.  I tried your suggested links, Metal Messiah, with no success.  Many programs won't download at all.  I tried to download adobe flash and while I was told the download was complete, every time I am on a website that uses it, I am being told that I do not have flash and need to download it.   All of my antivirus screening is clear so I am, once again, stumped.

Thanks to all of you who have posted.

Brenda, what AV did you run that gave you an all clear?......You said earlier that you couldn't download the programs to run the scans, but if you can download them on another computer, then on to a USB stick and then transfer them to your problem PC you can then run the scans...Regular antivirus programs don't always get it right.........I still think there's a malware issue here.

When I downloaded Safari in the way you mentioned from my friend's computer I could download the antivirus programs.  I have AVG, a cleanup, SuperAntiVirus, and Malwarebyte Anti Malware.  I ran them all and they did find problems but it says that they were deleted.

                                      So, that's that chapter.  I still can't open IE7

                                      SuperAntiVirus, or SUPERAntiSpyware?

If it is SuperAntiVirus, uninstall it, and just use AVG. Don't use more than one AV.

OK, I ran Hijackthis and the log is below.  Will Evil Fantasy get this?  Sorry, still too green.

Now another weird addition to all of this.  I just tried to install a program to view shows on ABC.com.  When I hit the "launch" I received a message saying "Oops" you must have one of the following browsers to download this.  It listed Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and a couple of others.  Well, in my mind, when I hit that Safari icon to access the internet, that means I have Safari, correct?  Or is this just a phantom?  Does ABC.com not recognize that I have Safari?  What could this all mean?  Too weird.

                                              Thanks
                                              Brenda

Thanks for responding.  I sent evilfantasy a personal message with the log in it.

Can you tell me, in simple term, what the issues are?  I'm curious.

                                                      Karnac,

I understand.  Thanks for all of the help.  Funny, I keep getting bumped out of this site.  When I try to write or modify a post, suddenly I am a guest and not because of time on the site.

Also, I tried to copy the log into the spyware forum and no luck.  It worked in the personal message but not again.  Maybe it knows you are trying to kill it.  Just kidding?

No Brenda, they know, and a lot of them come with databases of blocked sites built in so you can't get help from AV sites, forums, microsoft, etc.

I think that's what it is.  It seems on the surface that I have certain programs but when it comes to having them function, they don't.  It's like they are a false front, a shell.

Man, this has been an education.  Did downloading IE8 cause all of this?

Well, like I said many posts ago, all my problems started with IE8......as soon as I downloaded IE8 dozens of malicious script alerts hit my antivirus, crippling the internet access to a point where I could only stay online for 2-3 minutes at a time, then I would reboot for another 2-3 minutes.....I rebooted over a hundred+ times, got fedup and then reinstalled XP with a new harddrive, which I was prepared for(all backed up)......Hope you get back on your feet soon.  ;)
