All DVD drives will not work?
    « on: April 09, 2009, 09:16:46 PM »
I have a compact desktop pc running Vista Home Basic. Its about a year old. I have been having trouble with the original drive not reading any cd or dvd.  I replaced the dvd drive TWICE with brand new drives, but still it wont read any disc. Device Manager says it is running properly. When I go into windows explorer and click on the drive, suddenly nothing responds, and I have to restart my computer. All drivers are updated.  Please help me!

Did a search and found this, but I don't know whether it would apply.....Perhaps it is a bios issue since you've had the problem with multiple drives, but the same bios.

"Does your system refuse to boot known good boot CDs, like operating systems from Windows 98 on up? Try setting the boot sequence in CMOS Setup to boot to the CD or DVD first. This shouldn't really be necessary if the hard drive is uninitiated, but I've seen it fix the problem. I've also seen some high speed drives which take too long to spin up and report to the BIOS that there's a bootable disc present. Sometimes you can get around this by opening and closing the tray, which should cause the drive to spin up, and hitting reset right after you've done so. With any luck, you'll get the timing right so that the BIOS checks for a bootable CD while the drive is still active"

      And more here........

What drive connection is it? IDE or SATA? (I guess it's SATA as the computer is quite new but might as well make sure)

Its IDE. The original drive was working just fine until recently. I tried 2 different brands of drives. I did a system recovery, but still no luck.

What is the condition of the IDE cable? And is the drive in Secondary Master or other etc?

              One of these may help:
              1. Uninstall the drive through Device Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.
              or...
              2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
              Restart computer.
              or...
              3. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
              Accept registry merge.
              Restart computer.
              or...
              4. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
              You'll see two items:
              - ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
              - ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

                Replace the cable...
                Then try Broni's steps above...
Make sure there is only one drive connected at the end of the cable jumpered as master.

Although unlikely that it happened twice in a row i have seen many drives DOA fresh out of the box.
Maybe have them test the next one before taking it home...

I will try to replace the cable. Looks like I have to order it. No one here carries them

Any PC store should have IDE cables in stock...

Youre right. I found one and installed. Did everything suggested here, still drive causes windows explorer to stop responding. Heres the error detail Windows gave me:

I have been having the same problem.. I was told to delete the upper and lower filters in my registry. I did this which made it even worse. But then I re-loaded some DVD/CD burning/reading programmes and they replaced the registrys and everything seems to be working. I'm probably wrong because I'm no expert mate but if you would like the specifics then ask me. But make sure the experts have there say first. Good luck fella
