can't uninstall software logged on as administrator - Vista
« on: April 13, 2009, 06:31:54 PM »
My sisters  Dell laptop has way to many programs on it and I can't unistall any in "Programs and Features" because I get a message that say I must "log on as administrator" then it says "contact program administrator". The icon shown for her user account says "Administator" under it and there are no more user accounts. But if I open 'user accounts' in control panel and click on "Manage Another Account" it also shows a "Guest" account that is turned off, and another administrator account named "ASP.NET (and something else I can't remember)". I tried changing this account to "Standard User" but it still gives me the same message when I try to uninstall software.

Am I just not looking in the right place for administrator privlige?  Do I need to post some logfiles in the "Computer viruses and spyware" section.
Thanks
Mike

Enable the (Hidden) Administrator Account on Windows Vista: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/enable-the-hidden-administrator-account-on-windows-vista/
See, if uninstall will run from there.
If so, create new account with administrator rights, and see, if uninstall will work.
Disable hidden Admin account back. You don't want to play with it.

BTW: Works in XP also. And t is a good idea to have it active:no most of the time. It is security weakness in both XP and VISTA to have it active when not needed.

    It doesn't work for me...
The user account I'm logged into is listed as "Administrator".
When I open command prompt the window shows
    "C:\Users\Mike>"
So when I copy paste "net user administrator /active:yes" onto the end of that the command ends up being the following:

    Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6001]
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation.  All rights reserved.

    C:\Users\Mike>net user administrator /active:yes
    System error 5 has occurred.

    Access is denied.

    C:\Users\Mike>

That's not like the command shown on the "How to Geek" site you linked me to.
    Their example shows:

Is this why I get the error message shown above: "System error 5 has occurred.

    Access is denied."?

I'll try that when the 3GB file I'm downloading now is finished when I can reboot to safe mode.

First you'll need to open a command prompt in administrator mode by right-clicking and choosing "Run as administrator" (or use the Ctrl+Shift+Enter shortcut from the search box)

"Ctrl+Shift+Enter shortcut" does not work from the search box. Also what am I suposed to right click on, Desktop? The way I got the command prompt box open was to type "command prompt" in the search box, then double click on that shortcut. What am I doing wrong (in DUMMY terms)?

Try to disable User Account Control, first: http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htm
