System turns off on moving files
« on: April 14, 2009, 08:27:12 PM »
Hello everyone I have noticed the same problem begin to occur everytime I try to move files from one harddrive to the other.

I have 2 hardrives
320 GB Western Digital Corsair (SATA) Running XP Home
300 GB Velicraptor Western Digital (SATA) Running Vista Home  Basic

Someone on here told me to run the minidump and upload the results unfortunatly when I try to navigate to navigate to C:\Windows\Minidump it simply doesnt exist on my XP drive...however it does on my Vista drive.  Not this problem happens whether I move files from XP to Vista or Vista to XP.  Im really not sure what else to mention if I left anything out please ask and I will try to find the information the best I can.  I really hope to solve this problem.

Also when I mean turn off my system just goes into a strange hibernation almost (and yes I turned off hibernation)...There is still power to the system...mobo is lit and fans are all running but just simply a black screen.  To get back on I have to manually reboot with the reset button.

Well it says I cant upload the minidump file on here...any suggestions how I present this .dmp file to you guys?

How many files are you moving?
Are you moving them over a network?
Do you have a real-time AV program running?
What method are you using to move them?
What happens if you try copy instead of move?

Well the ammount of files varies.  I move from drag and dropped pretty much.  I go into my computer and go to where I want to store files on the other harddrive then just do a basic drag and drop.  The file types consist of my html work files, mp3s, videos, photos, documents.  I am pretty much trying to mirror the harddrives god forbid one dies.  There is no network here.  I have avg running on both harddrives.

Why not just back up the info if you are afraid of losing because of hard drive failure?
You can't fix Stupid!!!

This is my method of backup.  My thumb drive only holds 8gb so that wont cut it.  This is my only way I have to backup.  And whats ridiculous is that this method has worked in the past up until about 1 month ago.  So something somewhere went wrong along the line.

You may be hitting the 2G barrier...try smaller increments.

But honestly a disk imaging app such as Acronis True Image would be a real timesaver opposed to your method.

Let me see if I know understand it.
You have two computers with compatible Windows systems.
You want to have both computers to have you current project stuff.
You have a 8GB USB Flash drive.
Now you got an error using drowp and drag.

Is so,  then here is want comes up in my bird brain.

Maybe you have one or more of these:
1. A block of files are too large. Patio says the limit is 2GB
2. One of you drives, or the USB Flash, has a defect.
3. One of more of the files has been locked. By Who?
4. Somehow you crated a file that has a permission issue. It can not be copied  to a USB device using FAT32.

Suggestion: Have you tried using the Briefcase? It was intended to do what you want. It copies over just whatever is new or modified.

Oh im sorry I didnt explain it too well I have 2 hardrives in the same computer.  Im just mirroring them so they contain the exact same files In case one of them dies I always have exactly what I need on the other.  The flash drive was nothing I just meant it was too small to store all of my files.  But is this in facta  feature windows has inserted that makes your harddrive shutdown on a 2gb transfer?!   ::) What a stupid feature I think.  I will try to move over smaller groups of files and see if it does the same.

As for the briefcase I thought that was extinct after Windows 98!

Cool I will try to put everything in the briefcase instead of the normal desktop folder I have made and see if there is any difference.  I would imagine right click would allow me to make a briefcase folder in Vista too?

Vista does not have Briefcase...
Either Sync Center or Backup and Restore Center needs to be used...
I see my image suggestions fell on deaf ears... ::)

Now now don't jump to conclusions.  Im just trying to figure out why something that used to work no longer works.

this method has worked in the past up until about 1 month ago.  So something somewhere went wrong along the line.

Did you make any hardware or software changes before this happened?

Do you get any error messages when you try to move files?

Does this happen when you try to move files from the XP drive to the Vista drive, or from the Vista drive to the XP drive, or both?

When you say that the computer turns off when you try to copy files, does the computer completely shut down or does the monitor just go black?

There have been no hardware changes within the past 4 months.  As for software really nothing big at all I can think of.  Especially since I have formatted both of these drives after this began to happen so that would have wiped any potential software issues.  This problem does happen on both drives.  The computer doesnt show any error message or any type of logging off message it just goes right to a black screen.  The motherboard is still on (green light lit) fans are going however the harddrive seems to shut off...

There should be a hard drive activity light on the front of your case. It's usually close to the power LED. Have a look and see if it is still blinking.

Did you try that?

Does this problem only occur when you are trying to copy files? Can you install programs and move data around on each individual drive with no problems?

You have to zip the files in order to upload them.
