    strange computer beeping problem
    « on: April 17, 2009, 03:32:50 PM »
When I play games (or sometimes other things like watching videos) my CPU's temperature will go up and around 120-125 F my computer will beep really annoyingly. I say around, because it seems to do it at different temperatures, a few times it's gone higher without making any noise. Also I can alt-tab and the temperature will go down (and the beeping will stop) even though the game is still running. I've searched a lot but everything else I saw about CPU heating up seemed to be different than mine.

I'm not sure what info you would need or how to get it, but I can attach my dxdiag. Also I think someone I asked before mentioned my power supply so I tried to look for that and it says "L&C computer co. ltd" and "model:LC-B450E".

    Can anyone help?

125F = 51.7C, when running demanding programs, is not that high. Your processor max temp is listed at 70C, so I don't think you're overheating.
In any case, what program do you use to read temps?
When was the last time, you cleaned inside the case?

The tower has a thing that shows temperature on the front of it, you can switch it to see HDD or VGA as well but they never seem to change much. I guess it's possible that means it's not working well, but when my room is very cold I can play games so it has to be working somewhat.

I've been cleaning the inside a lot hoping it would help, the last time I did it was actually about 20 minutes ago. It wasn't too long since the time before either, and it still was screwing up.

      Download, and install SpeedFan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
      Post your computer temperatures:

Provide processor info (hold Windows key, and hit Pause/Break key to find out).

        This is what it says.

        Temp1: 31C
        Temp2: 61C
        Temp3: 34C
        HD0:     33C
        Temp1: 81C

I'm not sure what that last one is, my computer feels cool and is running fine, also that one hasn't changed since I opened the program.

Is this the info you need?

        Intel
        Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz
3.07 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM

I would leave the case open and keep a table fan on it to see if the beeping stops....smell anything strange?

          For cross reference...

          Download, and install Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
Expand Computer section in the left pane, and click on Sensor.
          What temps are listed there?

            Temperatures

            Motherboard   31 °C
            CPU   64 °C
            PWM   35 °C
            Hitachi HDS722512VLSA80   33 °C

For more comparison the gauge on my computer for CPU says 39C right now. I don't really understand how the other ones could be right though, if they were when I'm in a game it should get way over 64C and I'd think my computer would be totally messed up by now.

            Yeah, this is not good.
Your CPU temp floats around Temp2: 61C (SpeedFan) to CPU 64 °C (Everest). Remember, your max temp is listed at 70C.
Keep the case open, turn the house fan on, point it toward the case, and see, if the temps will go down.

              Temperatures
              Motherboard   28 °C  (82 °F)
              CPU   53 °C  (127 °F)
              PWM   28 °C  (82 °F)
              Hitachi HDS722512VLSA80   29 °C  (84 °F)

The same on the other one. I feel the need to point out though that this is not a new problem, so it doesn't really make sense to me, since I'd think it should be completely messed up by now if it's really that hot even when there's no games playing and it's not beeping.

Well, all I can see are temps being down by 10 degrees.
              I'd reapply thermal paste.

My thoughts as well or check the fans and see which way the air is moving.  Also maybe another fan.  Do these have leds?  Not sure if yours has a clear side or not but that will rise the temps a little.
Windows 7 RC Tester.  Working on it.  Your monitor says etchasketch on the side!

I did a little test by running a game and checking the temperatures, which I realize isn't really the safest idea, though I have been running games despite this problem for a long time anyway. It got really hot back up to the 60s very fast, with the fan still on it. Also I had said alt-tabbing would make the temperature gauge on my tower go down and stop the beeping but there was no difference on the other programs. It didn't beep at all actually and was even cooler on the tower gauge than normal, even though the other programs kept showing the temperature going up even higher than 69C.

Obviously at least one of these senors is wrong, and I guess I'll trust two separate programs over some wacky one on my tower, though I'm not too excited about having to reapply thermal paste. Though it still seems pretty weird to me, these aren't brand new incredibly demanding games we're talking about here.

What did you expect, you go in there with like a heat prob and see but that be like a good couple hundred.  A larger heatsink may do as well?

Don't try it again, or some serious damage may happen.
Obviously, your computer display is wrong about temps.
