I have windows XP as an operating system, and for some reason, I just recently started having problems accessing files under the my computer icon. It started about the same time that I updated to the new Microsoft Explorer 8 but I can't be sure.
When I click on the My Computer icon, the little hourglass comes up, for a few seconds, but nothing further happens. I thought if I waited a while, it may just come up on it's own, but I have left it for over an hour, and still nothing. If I try to click on anything else while this is going on, the computer stops responding. The arrow for the mouse still moves, but I can't click anything and make it happen. I have AVG antivirus and I have found that sometimes it will say that the virus definitions are out of date, even though I just finished updating them. I have also tried to go through the back door if you will and access files such as my documents through the search mode, but the result is still the same. I have restarted my computer with the last known working copy of XP and that has resolved the problem for an hour or so, but then it returns. I do have the AVG antivirus and have run it many times suspecting a virus, but it shows no problems. On the times that I have had to shut down the computer without using the start button, (because it wouldn't let me access it) the shutdown process begins, and then it says that the explorer program is not resopnding, and asks if I want to end it. Once I end the explorer program, it shuts down normally. please help!
    Thank you!

Processor type is AMD Athlon 1.4 ghz  376 mb ram  I use AVG antivirus only and have the windows xp firewall. I can't access the files on the my computer icon, but I recently defragmented the hard drive and it is 71% free space. I am currently downloading the program from the website as I write.

          The log looks clean.

Go Start>Run ("Start Search" in Vista), type in:
          sfc /scannow
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).
          Have Windows CD/DVD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD.
If sfc won't find any errors in Windows XP, it'll simply quit, without any message.
In Vista you will receive the following message: "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations".

For Vista users ONLY: Navigate to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder. You'll see CBS.log file.
Usually, it's pretty big file, so upload it here: http://www.filedropper.com/, and post download link.

If you don't have Windows CD....
(this applies mostly to Windows XP, since Vista rarely requires use of its DVD while running "sfc")
Note This method will not necessarily work as well, as when using Windows CD, because not always ALL system files are backed up on your hard drive. Also, backed up files may be corrupted as well.

          Go Start>Run, type in:
          regedit
          Click OK.

          Navigate to the following key:

          HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

You will see various entries (Values) on the right hand side.

The one we want is called: SourcePath

It probably has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive,(usually D:) and that is why it is asking for the XP CD. All we need to do is change it to: C:
Now, double click the SourcePatch setting and a new box will pop up.
Change the drive letter from your CD drive to your root drive, usually C:
          Close Registry Editor.

Now restart your computer and try sfc /scannow again!

Maybe, but it has nothing to do with the problem, plus the computer might be on a network.

Do you have your XP CD ? ?
If so go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...it may ask for the CD.
Let it run to completion and remove the CD and re-boot...

Do these symptoms occur if you use Windows Explorer ? ?
